2) Did you say you used the Huztl piston with the Cross Cylinder, and is a possible their dimensions are a bit different?

Good eye.Pecker marks around the outer edge look like detonation, but hard to tell in a picture

Marks on piston and band have sharp edges and corners. They also happen to be directly in line with the swell in cylinder wall and damaged ring.
