I recently picked up a 066 at my dealer, missing a lot of parts, the cases are good and so is the crank, it was a poly flywheel saw but it is gone, I was going to build it into a 064 but I am not sure that is possible, I would love to know the differences between the older version and the newer (like mine). I will be splitiming the cases and sending them for powdercoat more then likely, a big question is will the early fuel tank work on the later saws? As well as the P&C and plastics?? This saw is for me so being correct doesn't matter, but I do want it all to work and not look goofy. Thanks in advance

The poly flywheel crank is only compatible with the poly flywheels. This is due to the difference in size of the flywheel side stub shaft on the crank. You can now get an aftermarket aluminum flywheel for those which is made in China but I don't know if I would recommend it. I'm planning on doing a torture test later this spring on a stock OEM 660 using a Chinese aluminum flywheel.

You can put the early style tank and plastics on a later style case but you may have to do a little trimming on the top cover and the flywheel side of the top cover will protrude out over the starter a bit.

Other question do I have to buy a 066 P&C or will a 064 work as a direct bolt on?

I thought I read that somewhere, thanks, I will be very happy of you can still order the tank from a dealer with screw in caps. I think it is going to be an 066 at this point.
You will have to change the bolt pattern to make it work I think on the cylinder

I would prefer OEM first, but if the AM have a screw in cap then chances are the OEM will as well.

But I don't think you're gonna be successful putting an 064 jug on that case. The jug bolt holes would need to be moved out too far and I believe would make the flange weak. Also, the case you have is larger than what an 064 had. It probably wouldn't be as powerful as an 046 even. Thinking out loud is all. Ymmv

The early and late 066 have different carb box housings as well as plastics.
As long as the case and crank and flywheel match each other and the tank housing and plastics also match each other you can interchange the motor part with the plastics section from the two eras.
So if you have a good case/crank/flywheel from the early 066 redlight, you can install later curved, wide body tank, air filter cover, air filter base, and top cover on it. Any 066/650/660 cylinder is OK as long as you plug the decomp for early plastics.

Appreciate the offer but I am going to stick with the case I have, I already checked these over and prefer to keep the set the crank came from.

I had a thread on FHC about using an 064 jug on a 066/660 case... ill try to find the pics.
As stated above the jug bolt holes would need to be changed slightly. There's not a lot of room to spare so be sure this is what ya wanna do. I'd use a 660 gasket.

I will be rebuilding this 066 as a restored saw, minus top covers and clutch cover, I like oem starter covers and working components will be oem. I can tolerate AM for the top covers and clutch cover.
