I have had a complete 181 for a while, it actually had a decent 288 top on it when I checked it out. It never seemed to idle right so I did a vac test and the flywheel side seal was toast. Well the case on the other side had a serious crack. I figured I should go all out clean it up, put in new bearings and seals.

here is the pic of the busted case.IMG_5765[1].JPG

I had another case I figured figured I would swap the cases. The bearings were locked up in the other case. I split it put the new Nachi's on the crank. I had the crank in the flywheel side and was ready to put the other side on when I noticed this second case was cracked too.

I got a third set of cases from Brett @GoBigBlue1984

had to wait for them to ship but the third time the charm. It finally together. ready for assembly

You guys have seen a lot of this before. I will show you again for some eye candy and filler while I get to my next problem. I want to share something I have had really good luck with. For a degreaser. Denatured alcohol, its mostly alcohol but has a small amount of acetone to make it unpalatable. Chlorinated brake clean is kinda nasty and is extremely nasty if you weld the parts after. Never use chlorinated brake cleaner on parts you intend to weld.

Also cta's
cotton tipped applicators the medical folks use are handy on saws.

pic of box of random parts.

Here is the oiler going on. I assemble the parts here with some bar grease.

We get rolls of tape in these little round containers I have a pile of them, they are real handy so you don't lose screws and seals and stuff.

splurged for oem crank seals I learned lesson the hard way some place aftermarket hasn't caught up. Crank seals and fuel lines are a no go for this knuckle dragger.

slapped on carb and muffler. real close.

I tried to finish this built in time for Dans GTG
didn't happen. I even tried working on it at Dans but I was missing some of the needed parts.

Noah and I didi get the saw back together in time for the NY gtg.

On the way there I wanted to get a few gallons of gas to make sure I had enough. I figured I would empty my mixed gas in to the tank of the 288.

This is when I found out the tank leaked.

ALOT!

right on the seam.

it was a bummer we still cranked the saw to see it run. but didn't dare put it in wood.

So I had to take the tank back of which is disassembly of much of the saw.
the tank is glued and screwed together some how half of it was falling apart.

I figured I would try Seal All because it is only 5 bucks or so. seems to be holding so far.

I got these clamps from Dave (the definitive one) @Definitive Dave

Thank you they work terrific! If you need a set check these out.

Here I put some gas in the tank set it in the sun and shook it to see if it would leak.

So far seems good enough...

Here we are back together. This is after finding and fixing another problem that I didn't get pictures of. The hose barb on the Tilly carb was brokked and did a spiny spiny. I dug out another carb that was from a 181. Swapped the throttle shafts and gave it a fresh kit.

Here is what we have.

I just use straight gas anymore. It's cheaper than commercial solvent (by about 50% here) and doesn't leave harmful residue like aerosol brake cleaner.

I thought I had it, it sounds like it is hard on the governor but no I have another problem. I tried to put it in some wood and it has a misfire that is very evident under load.

I am hoping to work through the ignition this weekend. I'll keep you guys posted.

sorry this isn't a real exciting build, Just showing you guys what is on my bench.
It has probably been the worst fight I have had trying to put one together.

its seems like a misfire not an out of time. because it runs good then really cuts out with a bang more than a pop.

to me when a saw is out of time it feels weak then you hear the popping.

I appreciate the intel JJ I will try the upper first.

David, I’ve got one that’s doing something similar. I’ll post video this weekend.

Also check the ground screw of the coil to make sure you have a solid ground.

I’ve had hit or miss luck on soldering/plastic weld the tank seam on a few saws. Sometimes it works sometimes not.
