New pile the tree company dropped off. Any idea what it is. There are some good sized rounds I'll be noodling into quarters! I'm new to this wood thing so I'll probably be asking often. Thanks everyone!!

Soft maple comes to mind. Could be linden (basswood), but linden bark is usually thin and not as rough as some of those pieces. You might have both. I'm surprised they did not tell you what it was.

Tree companies around here will not deliver. You have to come and get it at their work site.

Is it a prick to split?

I should add I was able to get through it with my X27 with 3 hits. So not horrible but not straight ash or oak that I'm used too

I figured. I'm new to the wood thing. Just bought a house with a stove last summer, and I'm struggling to build up wood. I met up with a small tree service at the gas station and offered a place for them to drop the load they had. I've got 3 loads from them so far

Yep, maybe pignut hickory? Just a thought, but I'm not sure that its sapwood is that light. I'm leaning back toward linden (basswood). When it dries, it will lose a bunch of density. Makes good campfire wood.

First pic is different wood compared to the second and third. I don't see any grain in the first pic?

I noticed that also. Could be two different trees got cut down and delivered. One thing for sure, when you get stuff like this dropped off for "free", anything could show up and rarely will any two logs be cut the same length, the correct length, and be at a right angle to the grain. It often becomes a splitting nightmare.
