It is one of those things that is jug dependant.

Tall piston would be high in the exhaust port at bdc. Depending on skirt length you may not be able to power exhaust. At bdc it may cover the transfers too.

Could still run but it may be better to use a shorter/lighter piston and do extra machine work.

Darn hybrids.

That’s about what I thought. Taller piston will help with squish but hurt port area. Dropping the jug will make that worse. 1mm is 0.040”. At first that didn’t seem like a lot but the more I consider…

I think I need to put some parts together and see what I get. 52mm is a nice size. Lots of jugs and pistons to choose from.

Here is some pics of my dolmar 123 and husky 2100 hybrid. The cylinder plating is not great and crank has some play but going to run it until it explodes then I will build another one with a fresh cylinder from the duke. It is an absolute animal really good combo I have no idea what timing numbers are but maybe I will check it someday and see how it looks

I’m going to add this thread to the mix. It’s a good read on stroke and rod length. I think previously I have overlooked the importance of rod length.

Does the 2100 crank in a 395 count as a hybrid?

I know they’re impractical, slow to build and prone to failure but I love hybrid saws. So I wanted to create a place where we could compile info and get dorky on mutant saws. Please post up links to builds! Here’s some links to the more common builds:

Throw some more on here! The list lacks for Dolmar, Echo amd Mac. Discussion is very welcome. Mad scientists unite!

Tossing this one in for information. Not a complete build, but some helpful specs in there.

There has only been 2 that I have seen. Why not put a bigger cylinder on a dolmar 9000? They got the stroke and it's a big saw what do people think how about an 084 cylinder or even 066? @srcarr52 @spencerpaving

@Shane¹, it’s an exciting idea with a lot of potential. You will need to find a jug with similar base dimensions. Then deck height/rod length will determine as much as stroke. 070, 2100 and even 395 have potential depending on what you find.

As a caution, I started messing with a saw of that vintage and stopped before I got too far. It was just such a nice old saw, I couldn’t bring myself to hack it up.

I put a 395 BB (58mm) cylinder on one I did, I had to shave 0.100" off the deck or the cylinder flange would have been too thin.

@spencerpaving put an 084 (60mm) cylinder on his and had to weld the deck to make it fit.

It's also hard to fit much under the plastics, I had to trim the 395 fins quite a bit.

What about 084 with a 3120 piston maybe the height of the piston is different?
If somebody would buy this saw I would not do crazy stuff lol

No doubt I want to. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily protect it from craziness.
