The clutch cover and brake band thing is only because the early Swede-O-Matic (metal flag) brake is a completely different design than the later plastic flag style. Worm gear, I am not sure on that one. I think I vaguely remember @dustinwilt68 running into a similar issue?

I think there might be 2 different oil pumps, and that's where the worm gear issue comes from.

Ya I found there was a bronze worm gear and plastic one on the early 281's and then I believe they share with the 395. I got a worm gear from D Dave and it's too big. So now I'll order the right one and maybe get her back to running next weekend. Piston and cylinder cleaned up nicely!

Some of the oil pumps have a dust shield built into them, those take the smaller worm gear, later ones use the wider worm gear, the earliest used a brass worm gear similar to the 262 if I remember correctly. The metal brake looks cool but the parts are very difficult to find and most prefer the plastic of not going for originallity.

I think you can swap to the new style oil pump on the older saws. At least I hope lol. I will try in the future.

So what should I do to this muffler? It's in awesome shape. I was thinking i would trim back the tab inside the outlet. Let me know if anyone has seen this style muffler.

Having wait on parts isn't always a bad thing. Got me thinking of other things to do. After I cut the baffle out I port matched the muffler. Now I'll blast the deflector and the bracket and get some paint on them.

I came across a similar deal as JonCraig a few weeks ago except it was for two 288's. Neither one runners.
Looking to make one a runner for now and the other will be a complete tear down.
One seems to be a 1992 and the other is 1999 for sure.
We're the older versions a 52mm and the newer 54mm? They seem to measure that way but I don't find that info on line.

Was able to make the one a runner.
Still needs some love.
