I flush cut stumps with a Stihl 880 and I routinely dull chains fast with chisel 404 just as fast as 3/8. I will try semi chisel next time I order so chain hopefully it will hold up better. I really cant see any difference in the 404 staying sharper anymore so that the 3/8. I grind stumps as a business so this isn't something new to me right now FYI

Utah, unfortunately.....
Those both look pretty tempting. I'm not that stoked on a hard nose bar, but for $15, it wouldn't the end of the world to try one. Would either fit a mid sized stihl mount?
Only by opening up the stud slot to 12mm.

Easy enough to do with a small angle grinder.

I bought one of the .404 20" GB CN 40 bars a few weeks ago. It's one of the Stihl mid mount bars. I lengthened the slot on it so I can run an adaptor on my 395 with an 8 pin. My thinking is, it would be fun blocking firewood next to someone running a 460 Rancher, or MS 311......LOL!

I wouldn't run .404 milling at all. Puts a lot more load on a saw.

Milling is tough on a saw. Until I tried it myself, I couldn't believe how slow it goes and how long it takes.

My MMSW066 pulls a 36" 3/8 8pin through hardwood (cutting-not milling) with supreme authority. Slap a 28" .404 7pin (same size as an 8 pin 3/8) and I need to take my time or the saw will bog out easily.

Seems to last longer than 3/8 though. I wacked up a 36" by 70' hard maple with 404 with only one sharpening. That was cutting and noodling the rounds in half. Don't think 3/8 coulda done that.

Any leads on another one? Or did you get left coast's last one?

If you're cutting really dirty crap that's been dragged like a big job I did not long ago, I ended up using .404 chipper chain.

Sure it cuts a tad slower, but lasts a lot longer in the really dirty chit

I see. I've never ran 404 at all just 3/8 and 325 I usually avoid dirty wood as most of what I cut is green wood

How do these fare when cross cutting compared to regular semi chisel? I still need to try those angles you mentioned yesterday, think it was 20-20-40

In softwoods like cedar or fir i get a pretty nice finish with .404 chisel chain as long as i do not push too hard and let it eat as it wants .the .404 oils the bar better but there is more sawdust waste due to the wider cutters .Looks similar to a bandsaw if not smoother .

Unless it's covered with mud or drug through the sand I wouldn't get all that concerned about it .Just keep a file handy and use it often .
