Erik, contact Mark (Cobby08). He can set you up with anything you need at good prices, and he always goes to the Upstate NY GTG.

He also has .063 square file chain if you want to be adventurous.

For a work saw, with 28", I would stick with 7 pin. I like to lean on my saws.

Thanks Mike. Maybe it was cobby who was the dealer. I may be confusing him with Julian. Either way that's great.

I'm gonna try the 8 pin. That chart is great... Believe I need the large spline 7/8" one. If the 8 pin is too much I'll have a 7 pin that is on the saw to try. That saw may have the gonads to keep the chain speed up with an 8 pin. Will be fun to try.

Saw has a 7 pin. Just want to try the 8 pin.
Will see! Maybe skip chain with the 8 pin.
Will do some highly scientific analysis here boys LOL.

I can tell you that mine loves the 8 pin with a 24...I don’t have a 28 in a stihl mount but I have no doubt it’d be just like Al’s videos

I run an 8 pin on my 32" on my 385. Skip chain though. Such a great setup. That saw is ported for torque and lugging long bars... Done by Mike Lee. I'll try various things and see what we get. Al was running 28" with 8 pin I think and was suggesting an 8 pin. I'll try the 7 and the 8 and go by feel whatever I seem to like.

Very curious to see how the vibes are on her with the 272 meteor slug.

I think the pin you like will depend on the wood you are in, and your cutting style.

My testing with a 28" B+C reflected that full comp cut faster than semi skip, but your results may differ.

My testing was done with the 044 in Red Oak rounds approx. 20".

I used a full comp square chain with the 8 pin. It does depend on cutting style. If you like to lay it in and let it do it’s thing, an 8 pin should be fine. If you are someone who finds it easier to lever off the dawgs, I’d stick with the 7 pin.

For falling, I’d go with a 7 pin 100%

If my kids “treat” me by taking the saw to the Post Office for me today, which will certainly chew into their fierce TV watching time, Eric should have his saw before the weekend.

@malk315

I’d personally go with the bar groove you have on your other saws. This saw oils fine with .050, and all of my 3/8 chains are .050.

I think that the oil carrying ability is less important than getting mixed up/being unable to use the chains you have.

Lol I have mostly 0.058 chains :)
My 32" for 385 is 0.063 for oil.

The 24" sugi on one of the 372s is 0.050 since I think sugi is only 0.050

The 10mm 044 I was messing with was setup 0.063 I think.

I just keep my chains sorted and run what goes with what... Too many bars and odd setups acquired from Raffles and what various saws came with lol.

So I may go with 0.063 since I have no 0.050 28" chains on hand :)

Excuse to add to the collection.

I'll try to work on today getting an order in to get the parts.

Thanks as always for the excellent advice guys.

Since I don't "break" my own chains, I go by length. All my 20" is .050, but all my 24 + 28" are .063. There is no way you will get mixed up.

I think the wider groove is less likely to get "chip jammed" when the bar is buried.

I've had that happen is certain woods, likely cause I'm heavy handed, and I hate it!
