Watched the northern lights from 0100 to 0300 this morning and then slept a few hours (not enough). It's thunderstorming here in Yellowknife, NT so we're in a McDonalds catching up on internet stuff. We've been car camping on this trip as all our funds are going into the gas tank. (gas about $5 per gallon here in this part of Canada.) The last few days visibility has been obscured by smoke from BC fires. (we're headed to BC later in the trip. I think we're north of most of the smoke now. Probably be in the Yukon before the week is out.
Safe travels them fire's are every where but I don't think they are as bad this summer like last year WA state was nothing but smoke to breath in this year just a slight haze.

The lady that lives across the street had her 40 year-old sweet gum cut down this morning. Not my favorite firewood, but seems to burn fine if mixed with other varieties, at least for me. And I hate seeing wood go to waste. So after we came back from farm chores and got the dog walked I went over and asked the sawer if they had any wood they wanted to get rid of. He ended up leaving a good portion of the trunk in my driveway.

Not wanting it to sit for days, I finished with breakfast and pulled the saws and my boots from their summer resting place in the basement. I’m a pretty humble guy generally, and pretty shy with my saw handling skills (or lack thereof) so I was trying to lolly-gag a bit, hoping the saw crew would clear out before I had a chance to fire up my slightly-angered MS440 (they were running an MS290 and some version of Stihl top handle).

I was pretty sure they were done and about to pull away, so I went ahead and fired up the saw. That was a mistake. The sound stopped them dead in their tracks. I just put my head down and got to work. Later my wife said, “They were watching you real hard. Seriously, like the WHOLE TIME.”

Ah well…

Hope they enjoyed themselves.

You have more self control than me.
If I saw them using a 290 I would of been out there asap with a 440 lol.

Made some Tulip logs ready for milling with King Kong and a 36" bar. She was running fat in this heat, but did not bring the tuning screw driver into the woods with me.

I've been wanting to mill some Tulip for a while. At just over 30" she is about just right! I'm thinking it should be a lot easier than milling Oak + Hickory!

King Kong dropped this nice size dead Sugar Maple, and cut a few rounds. I think the chain was starting to dull, so I switched to my CFB Hybrid, which just ripped through rounds larger than the 28" bar would span.

Of course, all the other little Stihls wanted to play, so a couple of more got to see some action on the smaller stuff (My Asian 440 with an OEM 044 P+C) and an Asian BB. Both of these saw ran well, but my Asian BB was a little stronger. I'm very happy about that, because before I did the bridge ports and some addl port work, it wasn't!

Sweet gum is a good firewood as far as burning. Splitting it? Well, that's another thing. If you have a power splitter then get all you can as it will warm you nicely. I've nearly been hit with a maul in the forehead when hitting a wet sweetgum round. It just spits out a little juice and shouts NO WAY!

Me and @Scotty Overkill cut down a maple tree for a lady and her next door neighbor wanted everything! Branches and all! This is the only time that we've ever run into this. Cut down a tree and throw everything over the fence into the neighbor's yard.

We asked him what he was going to do with all the small twigs and he said fire starters for his fire place. Well he has himself a lot of fire starters and a lot of work a head of him!

He was out there last night as we were finishing up. He had a wheelbarrow a chair (to make himself comfortable) and some leaf bags. He sat on the chair and started snipping the leaves and smaller twigs into the bag and was keeping everything as big as your finger for kindling.

I got up, just had breakfast and sipping my second coffee - 7AM. :)

Before the heat sets in I want to check my cars front brakes, left side disk looked odd when I switched to summer tires.
I am about to do my cars annual inspection, so I might renew the front brakes whole.

Just made and had lunch.

I got a preliminary checkup on my car in the AM, brakes and undercarriage are fine.

The front left disk looks odd to me non the less (I took a look this morning).
I will have the car service have a look too and see what they say.

Are you guys allowed to work on your own cars over there?

The government only requires the vehicle to be in a technically correct condition, brakes, undercarriage, shock absorbers, control elements, electrics, exhaust gasses, etc...

Who makes the repairs don't matter at all as long as they are technically sound.

I got my current vehicle new 13 years ago, I opted to get an annual service made by an official service shop.
I will keep doing so as I like to sit into my car and take an unplanned 1000km/10 hour road trip one way without having to worry about reliability of my vehicle - never failed me yet, knock on wood.

Although, rust is taking it's toll. :(
My brake concerns are also rust related, I guess I don't brake enough to keep the front tire disks polished clean.
I was taught to maximize the engine for braking (5 gear shift stick in my current vehicle), when there is very little traffic I can get to and/or from work without ever touching the brakes, saves fuel too.

This was 4 months ago when I switched from winter to summer tires, outside looked OK

but the inside not so much.

I checked this morning and it looks a little better now than four months ago.
I am forcing myself to brake more often and much harder than actually needed - it appears to have helped cleaning the disk a little, still the inner pad is unevenly worn and doesn't touch the disk towards the disks center.
Brake test is positive and within specified parameters (as said, I had it checked today).

I think the main cause for the above was that last year I requested the service shop to replace the pads and if needed the disks too - they said no need to replace the disk, I should have insisted!
Pads were damaged after 12 years age, the damage went unnoticed by the service at two unscheduled visits by me claiming noise from the front tires, third visit I had them lift my car and pointed to the loose pad and broken pad areas - then they agreed it needs replaced.
The top pads were the inner ones, the bottom pads the outer, the pad that broke off the steel plate made the noise and was held in only by the disks radial wear - that could have been nasty had it ever slipped out.

Generally I'll have to replace the disks and pads as the unevenly worn disk will only unevenly wear any new pad.
The joys of owning an aging vehicle. :p

Got ya rules like that very from state to state here. In Kansas you just have to have the BARE minimum. While all states around us have what you talk about.

You see some real junkers on the road here and if you look close enough you'll see me in one too.
