661 has more torque. Almost like a hybrid between a 390 and 066 with the good qualities from both saws with mtronic. No long term experience with the 661, just what I think from one month.
I’d be pissed if the 661 didn’t start when I needed it to. That hasn’t happened to me yet though. What ended up being the problem with yours? Solenoid?Torque isn't any good when your saw won't start.
If I could buy a standard carb 661 I'd be all over it like stink on *s-word.

I know there is different coils and intake boots n chit between the old and new 661. Not sure if that means anything. The one I’m running has the straight intake boot I think.I still don't know dude, I tried a new one and it seemed to help but the problem isn't totally gone..got me...but I'm far from a good saw mechanic so that wouldn't mean much coming from me.
But when Its running good its a bad SOB.

Probably the new setup then I’m guessing. I don’t know much about the changes.
Do you know if he's running stock filter, MaxFlo or something else?I could show your post to a logger with 25 years of experience and who swears by his three 661's. He brought in over 70 flat bed bunk trailer loads of logs with his 661's this past year -- over 2.5 million pounds. I wonder what he would say?
Recalibrate?
Under warranty? Has to be the coil or solenoid. Clean the carb? That 661 wouldn't even idle long enough to do it prior to the new solenoid, but after the new one its still hit or miss.
Bullsh!t for a saw that expensive..and I'm a fan of the new technology in these saws.

It could be Ryan. It would be nice if someone close had a coil and another solenoid for u to try and definetely recalibrateNo warranty left...and it's already had a solenoid replaced
Shouldn't be any of those things for a saw that gets used 5-6 times a month.
I have a love/hate relationship with that saw.
IMO, "reset" it. when saw is cold or hasn't been run yet for the day.
I do it with bar and chain on, chain brake off of course. I hold the saw while I do the reset. I make sure the gas is topped off before I do it.
start on choke - don't touch the trigger. let it run on choke...stop watch it for 1:30-1:40. Then, Push lever all the way off in one motion.
next
just start it and let it idle. Don't touch the throttle at all. May take a few tries to get it started. May idle funny for first 10-20 seconds. just let it idle...stop watch it for 1:30-1:40. push lever all the way off in one motion.
next
start it and do 5 cuts but don't really get on it. (I can actually feel the saw improve with each of the 5 cuts.) your done. May take a tank or 2 for it to really get back to normal.
If still doing it after above reset and running 3 tanks. Then yes, you have a problem. But this is the very first thing I would do before diving into all the possible fixes. We've seen a number of guys spend A LOT of time and money trying figure out this type of problem on the mtronic. So I'd go the reset route, done with military precision, first. Just my two cents.
