Husky 346xp

Just ditch the stock base gasket, and make one from a alum can. Should get you in the .018-.023 squish range on a 346xp.

If you cut the base you will also have to cut the squishband to get the required squish clearance.

6" swing would be minimum, might not be able to cut some 80cc + jugs.

Nice!
why ya staying so far away from the chuck?
.
I was trying to see if I could make 2 mandrels from the one 12" slug.

Then I noticed that my 661 cylinder has about 1/4" clearance from the carrage, so I didn't want to trim it untill I was sure.

It didnt take too long to zero out, and the live center kept it sturdy, so with all of the questions I was coming up with, I just decided to see if I could do it with the 12" slug.

Its only out by .003 after the final pass, so I guess it worked out ok. I know that making a shorter mandrel is easier, but this wasnt too hard

Figured that as soon as I posted, hard for me to scale these little lathes, that looked like a 5"x 30 chunk until I seen the jug lol.

The 13x40 feels tiny compared to the old one. :)

Be on the lookout for a South Bend 9 or 10. Lots of them still out there, and a LOT of lathe for the money. Practicalmachinist.com is a good forum to check out.

a 13 x 36 or 13 x 40 is a very versatile lathe unless you only plan to do chainsaw cylinders... Small lathes can do a lot but sometimes a larger lathe is cheaper used than a smaller one. Just make sure you don't buy one that's all loosey goosey.

18" over the cross 24" over the gap 96" between centers :)
Yup, I'll just put my feet up on the rails of the front porch and relish in the good old days of when I used to run with you big dogs ..........

Have you ever used marvel mystery oil or a 50/50 mix of wd40/atf for lathe work ?

I use straight wd40 on aluminum and rigid cutting oil on all others

Honestly all the big equipment was before my day, used to have a 36x180
Used to be a small machine repair shop, sold most of the big equipment

Just do the portable stuff now. All I really know.

But this is my new one, just gotta get it figured out :)

Never used any oil, other than some wD40 for polishing. Unless drill/tapping. This stationery stuff is a bit different than what I'm used to.

13x40 or 14x40 is a very versatile size. No problems with clearance when swinging cylinders, you can make mandrels that have the cylinder close to the chuck.
They are pretty easy to find used as well. Most will be used in tool rooms or light work, not production. So they won't be all clapped out.

I have a 13x40 jet, green monster, back when they came from Taiwan. I probably use it once a week doing something.

What kind of spindle oil are you using in your south bend? How about way oil?
