I'd like to thank everybody for staying on topic on in this thread. It's certainly easier to keep track of what Scott is showing now that the thread isn't being clogged up with a bunch of posts that have nothing to do with the saws Scott's talking about.

Kudos to you.

I finished up on a 661 and moved on to the 200t.
rope is broke, air filter is getting thin, fuel line cracking but not leaking.
started a list of needed parts.
cleaned the saw up , looks good.
advanced the timing, carb mod, muffler mod, is all I do to these and is now done.
What do you do to the carb on these Scott?

I just read all 22 pages of this train wreck. Lol.

Lots of interesting info here. Certainly some things to make me rethink my grinding habits. It is simply amazing the difference very small things add up to.

Without trying to derail again, I just want to say that IMHO 50:1 by itself is not the problem (on stock saws anyway) Poor/lean tune, dull chains and abuse is what kills saws. The margin of error on 50:1 is admittedly slim. But, it works just fine as long as the aforementioned things are in order. By a sharp chain I mean the cutter is sharp and the rakers are set correctly, not the burnt tooth with rakers ground off that seems popular around here. And tuned to where the saw is happy and slightly on the rich side. I don't care what the rated RPM is. People get so hung up on max RPM and tuning with a tach. Just because the book says max 14,000 on a stock 460 does not mean you need to set it there with a 28" bar and a banjo string tight chain. I tune mostly by ear to where it feels right/ sounds good and a noticeable burble when unloaded. When I check with a tach I'm usually 13-13,400 on an 1128 saw. Am I leaving some speed on the table? Probably but who am I racing when I'm in the woods cutting firewood alone. I have a bunch of saws that lived/are living long happy lives on Stihl ultra at 50:1 and are fairly clean inside to boot. According to the web they should have all blown up by now.

Still 32:1 after all these years....and boy do I get Chit for it from the experts.

I'm no expert, but you won't EVER get chit from me for running 32:1... Husky Low Smoke for the saws and Maxima 927 Castor for the 250r's, all at 32:1.

Yeah, I don't like the glaring absence of oil in those bottom ends either....

I run 32:1, just to be clear.

I get the argument that oil burns hotter than gas, so more oil means more heat and that is a bad thing??
My understanding is the oil drops out of the fuel mixture and does not all burn. Not trying to derail, how do you answer that argument??

Some burns in the top end. It all doesn't stay in the bottom.

Scott, just a little tip I picked up from a build thread on here. If you pull the cylinder off of the saw it's easier to see into the cylinder. Feel free to use that in your own shop in the future.

aren't you the guy that told me that taking the cylinder off was a waste of time?

@tree monkey thank you for the thread, even tho its turned into a pissing match by others

don't ya just hate it when grandma wins.

Meh... Just need a "weed out the dicks program". I could clean this place out in about 20 minutes.

but ya might end up all alone.

WTF is going on in here?

Who ya wanna cull?

I got my ban hammer.

wtf, ya done scared everyone away.

Brad is building a 346....and minding his own business. He sent me pics.

nude selfies?

I don't measure intake either. I just eye it and stay within my skirt

how long have you been wearing a skirt?

:icon_popcorn:

I'd love to wash dirty saws and sweep chips off the floor in a few of you guys shops.

I haven't cleaned the shop in about 5 years, your welcome here anytime.

A couple questions come to mind.

Have you checked the squish? Any chance there could be a bottom end bearing issue at play here, allowing the piston to over-travel?

Was this cylinder new to this saw? How would the plating get worn through in such quick order?

what do I use to check squish when it is zero?
this was a new saw.
the piston is trying to clime through the port.

What's the weakest link in the chainsaw system?

the starter handle. cut it off, no more problems.
