Why is a wide nose bar better?

Do you have a link to this wide nose bar that was twice as much?

I have a wide nose bar, and have noticed that it cuts smoother (less vibes) vs a regular ES bar of the same length. Switching back & forth, from the narrow to the wide nose bar, on the same saw using the same chain, I can tell a difference, the wide cuts smoother. The wide also is faster, not night & day faster, but it's noticeable to me.

Redbull did some test of wide vs narrow bars, If I recall correctly the wide had 8-9% faster cut times.....

It would make sense that with a wider radius tip a bar could cut slightly faster. There would be slightly less friction on the chain as it makes a wider turn. Chain tension is a little bit of a variable though.

I have an older stihl bar that is the wider 13 tooth nose. The bearing in the nose is getting a little loose. What is available for a replacement.
Anyone know the part number?

I have one oregon guide too wide I will measure it and count the teeth for comparison

i didnt read the whole thread but the main reason they started making narrower tip bars is to lessen the area where kickback occurs. narrow makes a much smaller danger zone

I never was able to find a replacement tip for the 24" bar that came on my 044 in 1992.

Apparently, Stihl changed the bar/tip configuration but used the same part #s on the new parts.

Overall, it is the same as the old bar, but the new tips don't fit the old bars, etc.

None of my Stihl sources were able to help me. (I posted pics several years ago).

I also have a 24" wide nose bar that is good, and I know you can't get them anymore.

I had to drill through the oil hole so that the stihl guide would fit the 650av solo

On a sprocket nose bar your chain drivers are held in the sprocket so nothing should be contacting the bar nose itself…unless you’ve got some major wear issues.

As for longevity, I’ve never had a sprocket bearing fail (large or small nose radius) before the bar groove got slopped out. Your cutting conditions may dictate otherwise.

If you look long enough you can find NOS nose pieces .I was given a 32" bar in 50 thou but with a .404 nose .Obviously a west coaster .I found a 3/8 nose on flea bay for little of nothing .Old style Windsor McCulloch branded ,10 series mount .As far as the 50 thou slot I learned they did make .404 in 50 thou at one time .

You guys with the wide nose Stihl bars know what gauge they are? If you guys want a .404 wide nose tip and have an 064/066 to run them on I have 3 nos tips I got from an old shop. I have no bars they fit

I do believe these are the ones you need, 3 rivet Stihl tips but the rivet section is bigger and the tips are 2 15/16” to 3” where the bar and tip meet.
