Why is a wide nose bar better?

My 24" wide nose bar is .063, but the 24" bar with the bad tip (from 1992) is .050. I'll look for my old pics.

the wide guides were probably withdrawn because of the weight, I think

From what I’ve been told they went to the smaller nose to change the attack angle of the chain for less chance of kickbacks when the tip contacts the log behind in a pile or something else you didn’t see.

And I agree I was told by a few the wide nose left because of kickbacks and even a small reduction in that they were happy doing it, Stihl reprofiled the tips on the new laminate bars to help save weight so that may also have been a benefit. The laminated bars with the new graphics have slightly thinner rails and reprofiled nose to save weight. They claim 10-20% approximately depending on bar length and pitch.

I like wide tips on small saws. The radius common on 3/8lp and 1/4 makes it hard to bury the tip in a regular cross cut. The large tip bars on some 35cc climbing saws work well.

The bar nose on my grandfather's 1950's Sears gear drive actually tapered out wider than the body of the bar. That plus the gear drive and low rpm/high torque engine should have made it a death trap.
