I'm liking doing it this way because I get to use a 4-1/2" cut wheel on a grinder rather than burning through 2-3 little wheels on the foredom. Then bam, bam with the air hammer and the baffle is out. Less mucking around!

Those are AM mufflers. They have the baffle brazed to the top and back wall. The sheet metal seam ripper on the air hammer takes care of both spots. Then I just make a big deflector to cover the hole.
Nice work as usual Shawn !!!!!

I’ve noticed that the AM mufflers are slightly longer than thd OEM ones, and that tends to bend the muffler to case bracket. Cutting them in 1/2 takes away from some of that extra length

I don't run the gasket, just the heat shield. I also always hit even a new muffler on the disk sander to make sure the flange is flat. So I've never noticed them being longer.

Finally broke down and bought a like new one to test out today. Echo 590.
Just wanted to see what this bang for the buck 60cc is about.
Husky 2 series guy bought it new and didnt care for it and went back to the older huskys.
So worked out for me to get it from him to try out myself. Chain dont even look like it has ever been touched. Spur dont even look marked.

Is this the auto tune? Are you going to mod it at all?

Had a Walbro HD12 carb on the bench, have a ported 7900.......

Direct bolt in.

Stock Zama C3 is 18.8mm (ish) and the HD12 is 19.4 (ish), so a mild upgrade. The only difference between the two in regards to the swap is the size of the choke lever hole. The Zama has a smaller hole. Some people weld up the oversized hole, I just cut the last 3/16 off of a plastic vacuum hose barb and used it as a bushing. Hopefuly tomorrow I will get a few minutes to test it.

18.8 throttle plate or venturi?

My precision measuring device won’t reach in far enough to measure the venturi, the 18.8 is the cylinder side opening. I know; its not an accurate depicition of actual size difference. But it is a difference and I want to see if it changes anything. I think the best thing to do is the unlimited coil swap and a proper high side tune. Why not try the different carb anyways? The saw feels strong. But it is not easy tuning with the unlimited coil.

The saw runs well and idles well, accelerates right to rev limit smoothly and super fast. Tried to fatten it up and keep it from bouncing off rev limit (verified by tach) and it is poop in wood.

I’ll try to get some video.

I bet you get a pretty good gain out of the carb swap. It seems that a lot of saws are needing more fuel. My guess would be it's the good ole epa at work.

No not autotune. Not even a primer bulb.
Nope leaving stock. Not even going to muffler mod it for now. Want to test out stock.

Friend used it with 20" buried in dry ash yesterday with no problems pulling it buried.

That’s mind of the idea. I have been reading the thread over on AS by Poleman and it triggered the swap. I never really liked Zama carbs and don’t know enough yet to start drilling a carb. I have the HD12 and I also have an RWJ4 sitting here as well as a 394 boot.

So, we’ll see.

Again, I think swapping to unlimited will help the most.

Nice... Echos always seemed to be good solid reliable saws. Never the fastest or strongest but good workhorses.

Why don't you lash out and send that Zama to Rich (Poleman). He's done heaps of them and I haven't heard of any complaints. Send him a PM, he'll ask a few questions and then give you a quote.

MY bench - it has been years, but I finally got it cleaned off today. I forgot how big it was without all the crap on it.

I read all you posted in that thread as well. Phenomenal information! I will touch base with him but I prefer to do work myself.

Rich is just starting on modding the HDs. The Walbros are a LOT more involved in getting them to perform and even then they won't have the idle circuit of the Zama. Since the Chinese 'Twin Jet' Zamas are no longer available, it may be that the HD is going to be the modded carb of the future. Hopefully, Rich will come up with some good ideas for the HD.

On most of these saws it is not the size of the carb that limits the flow, it is the small air filter. I noticed that the engineers at Husquvarna on their ported 372 removed the HD and installed a modded Zama - they also gutted the high top filter and installed a foam high flow filter. Since they have a dyno to test their results, I figure they knew what they were doing.

The modded Zama gives a saw some 'grunt' and makes it a really nice WORK saw. Since you have one of the old Zamas, hang on to it - or get Rich to mod it (or do it yourself). Then you can compare it to the HD-12 and see the difference.

After reading the entire thread, I am 2nd guessing myself. Maybe I should stick with the Zama. My interest in the Walbro is more educational, I want to be able to handle anything that comes my way.
