Looks like hickory to me. We don’t have a lot of ash here but ours is lighter and the weaves in the bark is tighter. If a poulan wildthing will pull a 28” bar with an 8 pin sprocket in it then its catalpa.

Here is a smooth bark hickory from my my yard too . I believe it is a pignut hickory. Here is a nut . I guess it could be either ash or hickory . But are there nuts on the ground ? I have several hickory trees pignut and shag here nuts all over on the ground too. IMG_20180819_220224123.jpg IMG_20180819_220233561.jpg IMG_20180819_221104387.jpg

Barks are very very similar . Leaves if possible or fruit pics would be helpful

Both ash and hickory are common in NW Arkansas.

1st choice: hickory
2nd choice: ash

We have more hickory than ash around here. Also, those rings are very tight, which makes me think hickory.

Definitely not catalpa. Do or did you see any nuts on the ground?
I was online going off of the net on the population of the trees but I can be easily swayed to hickory.
So with the information given I will go to hickory with my 2 nd being.

Oh yeah.... that's some great firewood!! My favorite in the wood stove by far.

The boiler doesn't care much but it probably gets a little better burn time than ash or maple.
Get some locust black or honey (green color) and enjoy those stinky extra btu's. Just scored two cords again of honey locust dead dry for this season! I'll be testing air filters again. Found one tree with figure in it. Quilted base area :)
