Hi all, I plan to be trying to find a used 372xp . I'd like to know what do you all consider to be a good price for one. Also please help me out with ideas on how to check over saw in person to check its condition. One last question is it really worth the performance difference to find a used 372xp original vs buying the current xtorq version? Like how big of a difference is there. Thank you so much for any help you can provide love the forum!

All depends on condition for used.
Robin still has them, NIB if you want one.
Paveen (Robin) is a great source, I have bought from him and I will again but current peeing contests are making it tough. I believe Bruce might still have new 372's.

Ok thank you, does anyone have any opinions about original vs xtorq? If I do find one in person I know to check compression but that's about it except for obvious cracks and stuff. Not sure who Bruce is or how to find him

I don’t have much experience with the 372 OE but have much more with X-torq. They run very well but are devastatingly hard on the crankcase bearing pockets because the piston is so much heavier than what the crankcase was originally designed for. Of course this is only a fairly high hour failure but if you’re looking for used you’d better check for sideways crankshaft play on the clutch side.

Older thread, but could be helpful…

I prefer the OE version. Around here people are trying to sell them for $600 - $1000, depending on condition, regardless of XP/XT designation. At those prices, unless I know the person, I tend to lean towards buying a new OE from @NightRogue .

Rough way to put it is:

X-torque gives chain speed at risk of heat and slightly less torque; better for falling where speed may be more important

OE gives more torque and longevity at risk of slightly less chain speed.

Again, this is a rough way to look at it and may vary depending on the operator and their attention to maintenance and sharpening.

Mmm. Xt saves fuel at the expense of more heat and less torque and less longevity. Better for hippies where emissions are more important.

Oe gives more torque more speed and more longevity at the risk of being too badass.

Again this is a roughneck way to look at things.

All I can say as an operator is that OE is a better running, lighter and more maneuverable saw than the X-TORQ. The OE was maybe the best all-round chainsaw ever, definitely of its day.

The XT is a fine saw and should last a long time, but it weighs a much as a 572 or 46 series Stihl while being significantly down on power. They don’t accelerate as well as an OE and don’t seem to lug as well when it’s dawged in.

As far a maintenance goes, the 372 OE was pretty easy to work on. Not quite 046 simple, but it’s a standard pro level, pre-emissions chainsaw. I have not worked on an XT, but being a stratified scavenging engine, it will by default have a little bit more complicated intake tract, and run hotter, and have a heavier piston, using the same bearings as the OE. With that said, Husqvarna put a 75 CC top end on that same model, so I’d hazard a guess to say it works just fine.

They’ll both work, but the OE is a much nicer saw to run if you can use a saw well enough to get all the performance out of it.

Husqvarna's answer to the 044 was the 272XP and it fell short. They tweaked the timing and nailed it with the OE 372XP.
That is interesting, I have an 046 and a 272 and they felt about the same to me when cutting, I actually prefer the 272, as it feels a little more balanced. I was taking both saws for firewood cutting until the 046 developed racing stripes on the piston due to an air leak. A lot of people I work with use the 372s, they really like them. I think most are OE with a coupe of x-torq mixed in.

046 may run more like a 272 than it does an 044.
