A horse rancher came by my jobsite while I was noodle cutting big ash and oak. He asked if he could have the noodles on the ground for his horse stables. I said, "Sure."

He came back an hour later, filled four or five big sacks to capacity, and handed me a $20 bill. He said, "These work better than straw."

I can't get into noodling myself. Seems to dull the chit out my chain and then I get a flat side that makes it hard to roll to the splitter. Although I'm sure the sight of me trying to roll a 36" plus oak round is a sight to see. Especially when it has a limb nub yall know what I'm talking about! Start off heading for the splitter end up in front of the truck lol.

I don't usually do much of anything with the chips and noodles .Every so often I take the skid loader and scoop up the mess and dump it on my burn pile .I have on occasion thrown down a tarp and save hickory saw chips which I gave to a buddy of mine who used it in smokers ,made some pretty tastey stuff too
Then too on hickory I have raked up the little odd splits and burned them into charcoal to grill steaks on .Problem with that is takes about 2 five gallon buckets full and several hours before you get a good bed of coals .Then again on a nice summers day waiting on that under the big umbrella laying back drinking beer is not all that bad .

Before I forget I live about 5 miles from a hardwood mill, small scale like most of them in Ohio They sell a little bit of it for horse bedding but most of it piles up in big piles .Then all the sudden it's all gone .Somebody buys it all up to press into charcoal .Somebody once said sawdust is the most expensive portion of sawmilling but has the least profit .

When I was kid growing up in a little village of about 500 people there was mill in that little burg .On ocassion I even worked for the guy dragging big McCulloch saws and wedges into the woods .We had laying hens and used the planer chips and saw dust for chicken bedding .Talk about stink, oak saw dust and chicken chit.Smelled worse than a bucket full of fermented skunk rectums .

I do like my idea about squirrel noodles better so far. Or even some chicken and noodles is not bad.
Merry Christmas to all you saw hacks. Take some time and sit by the fire this year and count your blessings!

Fermented skunk rectums!!!

That's awesome!!

Had a client bring in a vulture that was dinged by a car, the vulture regurged dead skunk parts that had been run over several days ago. Maggots the size of night crawlers were wiggling around in the non-palatable soup of the day.

The vulture was fine, outside of losing his early lunch. Never saw or smelled anything worse, yet.

I bet the coroner, police department and forensic dudes have seen worse!!!

I usually don't noodle much, but bucking chips and rare noodles get collected and stored for rabbit and chicken bedding (instead of straw which we no longer have/make ourselves).
In the summer noodles are great for strawberry bedding, that way they have little to no dirt on them after a rain shower. It also seems to help prevent the dirt from drying out.
My mom also spreads chips under her flowers, looks actually quite nice.

I know people that stuff chips in metal cylinders that have holes all around, they feed their fireplace with it.
Obviously the burned empty metal cylinder needs be replaced with a full one at some point - I always though that would be too much of a hassle inside my living room thus I never pursued that idea on my fireplace.

Chip feeding attachments are somewhat popular in my area, it mounts on top of a fireplace features a smallish container for wood chips and is electrically driven/regulated. It can also be converted to run on pellets.

Last weekend before Storm Jupiter hit I packed up a plastic kitchen bag with some of the noodles that I had stored in a 90-gal barrel. Then I gave it to one of my friends who said he was running short of kindling. He tried a few handfuls and then called me back and said, "Amazing! Those things worked fabulous."
