I have an old lincoln 225 stick welder and i picked up and i know its not the perfect setup but i run it off my generator. So i jad some 6013 rods and they worked pretty good.
Thought I would try some 7018 rods and i cant get it to strike an arc for the life of me. Did I get the wrong rods? I read something on line about thernis 2 types of 7018 on just for AC and ond for both AC DC welders.
Are these rods propper?
Thanks for any help. Im kinda green to rod knoledge.

7018 need a lot more amperage to burn. You would probably have better luck with 3/32” instead of 1/8” but you’ll definitely have to turn the machine up every time you put a lo/hi rod in your holder.

Is the metal clean? 7018 doesn’t like dirty metal. Also once they’ve been struck they’re also a little challenging to get restarted. Normally with 1/8” you’d be 110-120 amps. Crank it up to 150 and see what happens. Make sure ground is clean, material is clean where grounded and where you want to strike the arc. For that machine I’d have 6011 for dirty stuff and 6013 to make nice welds.

I tried it on 125 amps (i think the one setting is). The setting its at now was i threw a smaller 6013 on to just do a quick tack.

I took the wire wheel on the grinder to the weld joints befor welding. I think that would make them clean enough. Maybe be beter to put the grinding wheel on and hit them again ?

I also have a little tiny stick welder that is ac/dc. I just tried it with these rods and the little fella acually welds really good with them.

I went for a drive to the hardware store and picked up some 6013 rods to try and it welds really good now. Guess the old welder dont like something about those 7018 rods.

I thought those were dc only??? I read the packaging. I see it says ac. How long these things been around??? I need to go rod shopping again. I burn 6011 mostly. Obviously I have ran others for specific applications. I didn’t realize I could burn those though.

turn the fire up merc . Could be possible I don’t know. But maybe those rods need more heat because I believe the old ones would only burn on dc. My welder is ac only so I don’t even own that number. I may get some though

Don’t think Lincoln makes good rods anymore. Gets old day after day fighting bad rods.

Unless you are going to be welding vertical, there is no need for 7018. 7014 strikes a lot easier and has the same 70k tensile strength. 7018 is not for high carbon steel and 7014 is good for low alloy steels, and can be used in damp locations, where 7018 should not.

6011 for anything dirty.

6010+ 1/8” 3/32” is a pretty good all position rod.
If I had to pick one rod to weld on everything. They do have a tendency to pinhole tho.
A/C isn’t a very good choice for critical welds

You don't like it when they start burning off to one side?

I have the little brother to the Lincoln tombstone and I could never get it to run 7018ac right. Certain brands of 6011 also didn’t like the buzz box. Last year I bought a 200 amp suitcase dc welder that is much nicer with any kind of rod. I was going to sell the buzzbox but I changed my mind, figured it’ll outlast me anyway.
