I just put a new Hyway cylinder kit in my 272xp, new seals gaskets, vac/pressure test, pre lube piston. After half a tank of gas, I lost compression and found scoring. I use amsoil synthetic at 50:1. The starting needle settings were one turn out. My other 272xp went through a Hyway kit after half a dozen tanks. The nwp kit lasted a few years, which I'm ok with.. Am I doing something wrong? Here're a few pics. You can see the scoring all over, including the mark from the ring gap pin on the intake side. Any help is appreciated. Btw, I use my saw almost every day for one tank each day.
Thanks
Frank

I would, but now I'm gun shy that I would waste an OEM.
This week alone, this is the third A.M. cylinder I have heard this same story about.
1/2 tank, 1 week, few hours of run time.
Plating failure and manufacturing problems are common. Many bores have been proven out of round.
This is a lesson I’ve learned and moved on from.
If you can tune a saw, run quality fuel and oil, and you’ve done your due diligence inspecting crank and main bearings as well as pressure / vac tests, what else is there to blame?

I was under the impression that a cylinder kit was ready to be put in and needed no rework.
Not with the china stuff
You have to check every edge and part carefully.
They are inconsistent.
Actually the @Spike60 just tested a hyway

That’s not scoring across the ring to loose compression. Something is probably up with your compression tester.... how does compression feel pulling it over? Sand all the port edges lightly with 320 grit, throw away the chinese ring for a caber and throw away the chinese circlips for oem is what I’d do with aftermarket parts.

What did your compression go from/to?
I didn't even bother putting the gauge on it. It had good compression when I started it. After running a bit, I shut it off for few minutes. When I went to restart int, the compression was to low to fire. I could feel it with the pull. This saw won't start much below 75 lbs from my experience. After cooling off, better compression and it started. Then I tore it down.

I didn't put the tester on it . I could feel it. It was too low to pop, until it cooled down. Then there was some compression and it started.

I would be interested with what he found.
He'll probably stop by here I tagged him.
I think you'd be better off with a used oem
Cylinder.
The hyway pistons have been fine
No problems.

And it pretty much sucked. LOL

Compression with a gasket was only 140psi, and this was their pop up kit to boot. Deleting the gasket for 1184 has the compression up to a useable 160 something. Have run it very little so I can't say anything about how it's wearing.

My impression about the Hyway kits is that while they look nice, they all tend to have bad compression/squish numbers out of the box. And we're hearing too many stories about the plating failing. In that context they are really overpriced. What I paid for that kit was what I pay for an OEM kit (at dealer cost.) But my buddy Walt has been on a pop up kick lately so I figured I'd try one. MISTAKE! But ya gotta experiment a little here and there and they don't all end so well. I won't be buying any more hyway kits. That piston in an OEM jug might have been interesting, but I didn't have a used jug to try it with. And I wasn't going to stick a chinese piston in a brand new OEM cylinder.

From my experience the $15 huztl kits may not look as good, but they seem to last longer. And at some of their prices how can you go wrong? Most of the so called "premium" aftermarket kits are to close in price to OEM to bother with.

They must have more than one 272 cylinder. I just put one on a 61 and with the base gasket the squish was .0195. I haven't checked the compression yet so I can't say what it will be.

This is the one I used.

Either that or a serious lack of consistancy in play. I've found that over the years. Never quite sure what you are going to get. With the low priced kits it's not a big deal. But at the prices Hyway is charging that shouldn't be happening.
