Just got home from being gone a week, that was in NM mountains with a fellow OPEr, then TX for turkey n back. Was 80 when I left, now the high is 71 - low 46. time !Wearing hoodies, must be down in the 80's there now??
I used a super tall face cut to help with that, but you're right, too much hinge is not a good thing.I once left too much holding wood pulling a tree from a house…didn’t ’chair but it could have…careful!
Running a few ported 500i’s for a day or two lately reminds me to appreciate how good I used to feel after running the 394/5’s all weekendLiken that 500 I bet ,

I’m in some nice Red Oak today. MMWS 462c with 24” Tsumura wrapped in Oregon 72EXL.
Nice work. You’re not too far from me. I have logged in Buffalo Co, but mostly stay on my side of the river now.A row of pines on the farm I grew up on were in the way for modern ag equipment. Planted by a great uncle of mine, the largest one was very close the power lines, yet not “close enough” for them to top it or take it down for us. Of course they pointed out that if the lines were to sustain damage as we took the tree down, we would be liable.
Barely visible in the pic is a cable connected to a 70’s White 2-70. The wind picked up just as I prepared to make the cut, blowing toward the power line. I left a fairly thick hinge, maybe more than was needed, then pulled it over with the tractor. It went as planned but I was relieved once it was safely on the ground.
The saw used was an 046 bought from Dick Harry, an iconic Stihl dealer in those years in Alma, WI. A bit after Dick retired, his son Jerry (now also retired) open a Stihl dealership in Nelson. You know, the type of dealership real saw people are drawn to. One where the owner performs all the service work, is highly knowledgeable, actually stocks parts, and has great prices. We miss Jerry and are reminded of that every time we visit the nearest current Stihl dealer, at an Ace Hardware store…….it’s just not the same.

When Fred retired the red wing implement it was a sad day as well. He did the work himself and knew his stuff. His last day I went to congratulate him and ended up helping him as customers were lined out the door. I was less helpful then I am now which still isn’t much. However he did take me to lunch after he locked the doors for the last time in business. I still have his number and have reached out for help finding parts as he sold most to a dealer somewhere south of him.Nice work. You’re not too far from me. When Jerry retired, that hurt a lot of loggers who relied on his service and good prices. I’m afraid the days of mom’n’pop dealerships are over.. And I agree, the surrounding dealerships leave much to be desired.
