Milling is tough on chains and saws ... all that fine dust.

I usually set up two 660s with 36" full comp square file.

Say I'm milling 22" Red Oak at 7.5' length, I'll fill the tank after two cuts and change saws after 4 cuts (if I don't hit anything).

By then I'm usually spent and take the stuff home and sharpen it.

A lot of work, but I love how the boards come out and what I make with them. I usually keep the half round sides for benches.

This is at my cabin. The bench on the left is Chestnut Oak, the table is Chestnut Oak and Red Oak (the center piece and legs), and the bench on the right is Hickory.
Beautiful table there, buddy!

Thanks!

An "unintended" benefit for a hunting cabin table ... with the two pedestal legs, there are never any mice on the table ... guess they will not go upside down!

You can leave paper towels on the table and they are still there the next time!

Fence row trees suck! I worked on a row for the in-laws Saturday. Always leaning the wrong dam way, never straight. I got some big double stumped Maples to deal with. Have to cut them 3-4’ high because the fence is right through them. I’ll get some pics when I go back.
You’re doing a fine job by the way!

I don’t have any pics and my commentary isn’t worthy of its own thread. Bucked up a big blow down hickory this weekend. Probably at least an 80 footer.

My first experience with RM chain, have always run full chisel previously. Bought a loop on a whim a while back. I don’t think I really dig it.

I guess I can see how it still sorta cuts when dull, whereas a full chisel just stops cutting. But when it’s freshly sharp….meh.

Out of box RM isn't overly great. Re-judge it after you put a file on it. I was the same way. Took me a couple of trys, but once dialed in it is good chain.

I hate working with trees with vines ... but it seems to be getting more common!
Come on down here to South Central Virginia, you'll get over that! Poison ivy, wild grape and multiflora rose abound, especially on field edges. And then the honeysuckle will trip you up in the vegetation.

Any pointers on filing semi-chisel are appreciated. I’ve filed it twice now. The hickory understandably dulled it a bit, Saturday.

I filed it Sunday in the shop before dealing with some ash and a great big standing dead black oak. Did it the best I know how and used the Stihl progressive raker gauge.

It was cutting decently and then I promptly rocked it (or something) in that oak. Filed it again in the woods and was underwhelmed with the results. Might be my fault. But I don’t see right now why I wouldn’t use full chisel all the time.
