What are they doing with these small trees? Is it even worth it?
I know u only cut the trees. Wait some years and under the dead trees you will find so much new young trees.
They are still getting plenty of sawlogs out of these...There are thousands of acres of trees smaller than this that they will just re-plant under the standing dead stems. They need to salvage what they can.
It will be interesting to come back into the burn zone here in the future and see the difference in the re-prod growth on a cut-over vs standing dead fuzzies.

No way I was gonna bang wedges with that stick hangin above my noodle.
That's right. I've probably done 100 of those.
Some pretty sketchy ones. If I take my eyes of the top it's only for a split second. I always do an open face conventional side notch. Much like what you did. Always a bit higher so you are standing straight up.
Always go back away from it before you start and pre cut a 12-13ft push stick and cut a point on it so then you don't need a deep undercut as you want to set a wedge if needed so you don't get in a pickle on something like that.
I've pushed over 20" Aspen that was back leaning very easy.

here in germany we have been struggling with summer drought and bark beetles for the past 3 years. some say you should cut down all the trees, others let them stand. a controversial issue. But for the beetle wood you get 26 € / m3 and the processing costs 25 € / m3. so you don't earn anything

why not spend money to control the Beetle? Burn them in the winter

Finally got to light this off today!View attachment 286270

After I left work a co-worker called me because he couldn't get the pump on the water tank working, the boss wanted it dead out... I said go home because that's a stupid waste of *f-wording time with a 40 foot wide fire break and green grass. It would take about 2000 gallons of water and a loader to mix it up few hours to get that pile dead cold out. The water tank is only 125 gallons.

I can't believe that is allowed in CA...

There’s a lot of burning going on right now, easier for Fuels reduction and hazard reduction permits
Lotta stipulation on them especially in the Bay Area where I’m at. Very restrictive .
We’re gonna burn (my agency) about 50 piles (size and shape requirements for smoke mitigation) and we’re about 10 miles north of the Golden Gate

This is my sub-set of rules (and the only Open burn class I qualify for) for burning on my 1.5 acre property which I fall under for the strict Bay Area AQ district. It switches to a less restrictive Air Quality district about 15 miles north of me

9A1D4FFD-F952-44BE-B04E-ABE4B17ADBC9.jpeg My two teenage sons are trying (with some constant encouragement) to get a little firewood business going. Had a guy request some hickory and dropped this snakey thing on Saturday. Not a super tight shot, but any other direction it might have got hung up, so I always feel good when things go as planned.

Side benefit for removing this particular one is more sunlight on the woodpile.

Ornery devil to split, even with the gas powered splitter.
