If you go back some of the shops along hwy 101 before spinreel and outside Florence rent SxS’s it’s a blast on either an atv/atc or a sxs

If I can remember, I learned on here to give the trunk a few good raps with flat side of ax and listen for hollowness. Works a lot of the time, sometimes it doesn't.

Yeah it works sometimes also you can see a change in sawdust colour
And the smell of the shavings the more pungent the more rot there is

Thanks for that tip AJ. [emoji106]

I’ve had a few over the years especially sweet chestnut and White Ash
Where the waters been seeping out as you cut and when you cut the rings up
Knock the middles out and you got some plant pots

I remember one Ash when I was cutting The smell was like road kill
All the centre was like black compost

I hate trees full of water ,its pitchy water sometimes and sticks the chain in the rails of the bar so it wont spin. Good tip on boring to check for rot ,i do just below where my felling cut will be with bar up and down,if chips are brown it's rotten.

Great tips fellers. Standing dead is dangerous, unpredictable stuff. Not only in felling them, but also the explosion of limbs that come flying off them as they plow through other trees on the way to the ground.

I’ve got a big white ash that’s dead on the stump but still seemingly solid. Nice seasoned firewood. But it doesn’t even get any leaves in the summer now. Probably leave it for mama nature to take down.

0E52B91F-BF08-4A49-AC2D-6134F4F23152.jpeg Took this one down in a field edge today. It had a deformed top and was weighted all to one side. I was a little worried it may chair on me, so I bore cut it to set the hinge then cut the trigger. Came down fine with a solid trunk. This old maple had been around a while. Downside was I found some barbed wire in it and had 91 DL bar and chain!
