All the old heads at the dealership said that Fram filters would starve the 22RE of oil. Don't know if that was just scuttlebutt or what. I suspect the more likely cause was neglect, since they would usually run great until they experienced the same thing that happened to yours. Do you still have the original head? If so, could it be refreshed?
Yeah I have 3. I’m a freak. I’ve got a rebuilt one I have to send one of my old ones back for a core charge 300 $ to my door.
With a Toyota 22re you need a good filter with a good anti drain back valve. I drive it basically daily so not as critical but I run Baldwin. They’re pretty good. Honestly the failure was just a worn out chain. They are notorious for that. I put one in 8 years ago. Honestly didn’t realize how long ago it had been.

I plan to have it back up and running in a couple weeks here. I haven’t had dedicated time to focus on it. But the plan is to start tearing it the rest of the way down this weekend. The last part I’m waiting on is a Toyota oem head gasket. I’ve got an aftermarket one or two but I don’t trust them on these engines.

A reputable shop that does heads should be able to source replacements either with the old valves in hand or with precise measurements.

This^^^

The shop I have been using for years for my tractor stuff does that. I take in the head, they find suitable automotive parts that measure close and they can.machine them to the correct size. Last 8 valve head I had them do this with was around 300 bucks with everything but the casting replaced!

It is not done yet. Needs to be done. I’ve got all the parts. Need to just take a day and get it done. I’m going to need the truck soon. It’s pretty aggravating not having my tools with me at the shop.

When should I change my oil boys??? I run a very large filter if that matters.

rotella is on sale for 13 a gallon at Walmart by the way. Just bought 10 gallons for my personal cars. Now I have 20 gallons. I’d imagine it’s gonna go up. Just a heads up to those following this

Just rolled over 100. Checked the oil. Looks the same as when I put it in. She’s starting to come around. The 22re is never gonna be a powerful engine. But I think I’m noticing an improvement. Could be the cam could be the fact I’ve got good compression again

I've got just over a thousand miles on mine now. Biggest improvement is how quiet the engine is. Doesn't sound like it's going to explode anymore!

Fixing leaky valves will improve it for sure.

Well my valves weren’t leaking. I put a new head on it a few years ago. Only reason I needed new valves was on that engine when she goes out of time. Piston hits valves. Then they’re done. So sadly since I couldn’t source the valves she got another. New head. She was burning oil because my rings were shot. That’s what took me so long. Got all new everything. Oem at that. See if she’s got 300 more thousand in her
