Yesterday I was cutting down a silver maple at one of our rental houses since the surface roots were creating problems and I experienced something I hadn't encountered in 46 years of cutting trees. This was a pretty normal yard tree and not overly large. (maybe 14" dbh). As I was making the back cut, liquid started coming out onto the bar. (not unusual) but then a geyser of "water" spewed out of the tree completely dousing me. It was like a garden hose was aimed at me. I completed the cut and when the tree was down, I looked and there was only a small hollow area in the center of the trunk. This was completely packed with mud. This wasn't decayed woody material but actually soil. I'm still not exactly clear of what was going on but it was strange... No additional liquid was coming out of the stump.

Wow. Didn’t snag a picture by any chance ? I’ve never seen that. I’ve seen ridiculous amounts of water but never actual soil

i found this rock. helping remove a big hard maple in town. going to cut stump low and made it about 1/2 through and hit something, smoked the chain. we left it that day and came back to it next time we were in town, came in from the other side, made it about 1/2 through and hit something again, smoked the chain. i said piss on it. knocked it off w the skid steer. found this basically exactly in the middle, can see where it got cut on both sides. third pic is sort of how it was oriented, i was pretty spot on with my two cuts at least lol.

If you worked for the agency that owns my workplace, you would have just kept on cutting. I watched a guy smoke a super dull MS250 the other day removing some old shrubs.
