Thanks. Is the MS-251 a decent non-pro saw for it's size class? There is a like new one for $250.00 locally. My papaw was a Stihl guy so I want to have a Stihl in the collection

Hi folks.

I’ve been sitting on an 024s for a long time. Went ahead and ordered 42x1.5 Cabers before I pulled it apart. Rings on OEM piston turn out to be 1.2mm. I didn’t see any other piston setup in the IPL from 2004 I looked at. Are these (11230343003) called for? Maybe same ring as early 025’s?

Piston is clean, but the PO wrung all the life out of these…and more.

Thanks for the help.

3hp, 11lbs clamshell construction. I think you'd be disappointed compared to the MS261 you already have.

Hooked up the neighbor kid with a new clutch cover and 28" bar and chain for his 441. He had a 20" bar with full skip. Hes a good kid ...kinda squirly. Gotta keep an eye on him.View attachment 418884
You kinda want to keep the air filter cover on that saw, it has the same air injection feature as Jonsered saws ,which will keep the air filter clean.

Thanks. Sold the 261 for more than I had in it to someone outside the forum that wanted it to pay some bills. I'm not in a hurry to replace it or anything. Regardless of what the specs say, the 261 felt really big and heavy compared to my Echo CS-500P. My back muscles didn't much care for it. Weight and size of a saw (and other things in life we get close to ;)) are very subjective. What is comfortable and fits like a glove to one guy might be gigantic and weigh a ton to another guy and yet too small and dainty to another!

Well, it's nice you made a few bucks on it. Yeah, those specs aren't always accurate are they. The 261 does look good on paper...I fondled one a bit at the Stihl dealership (pho) can't say I've run one though. My backs not what it used to be either. Also find myself grabbing a 50cc Echo most often.

In any kind of work, my back muscles are always the first to complain. Even when I was thin and in shape working on a golf course in high school that was the case. That Shindaiwa T25 weighed about 100 pounds at the end of my shift. Today afternwork I dug and planted a 70 foot row of potatoes. Had to hurry to beat the rain, and I'm not.getting off this couch 'til bedtime!

The big saws are cool but I'm just not up to running them. In any event, I can't think of anything on my property that a 50cc wouldn't handle just fine. Hell my dad heated our house with a little Homelite Super 2 and he cut some really big trees with it.

Seeing this discussion about a 261 feeling heavy is funny to me... i have hereditary degenerative disc desease, so my back has always been a mess... if im not reaching for a ms170 or ms194t(which is a recent addition and light years more grunt than my tired 170, in a lighter package) i am usually reaching for bare minimum my 044 or my 661... 🤣 depending on what length bar i need for the job at hand... my ms280 almost never comes out, probably because it wears an 18" bar, and my 044 currently wears a 20... given those 2 saws with similar bars, which would you grab, the muffler modded 280 or the ported and muff modded 044....LOL one of those saws is way more fun than the other....

Oh I get it! Some things you do because the fun outweighs the pain by a large margin. My spine is fine, it's always the back muscles that give me problems. You would think they would toughen up over the years but no. Never seen a 280, is it a Euro market saw?

Nope, american market, loosely based on the 028 super, but kinda a bastard step child... its half clamshell half mag case, so you get the "pro"durability of full mag case half on the bar mount/pto side, and a hair of weight savings with the plastic flywheel side.... cant imagine why that wouldnt have taken off LOL, and Intellicarb (was offered as a standard carb model as well) which was the precursor to Mtronic, but you still controlled the idle mix and speed...

Wow, never heard of such a thing. Some Echoes used a mag tank housing but with clamshell style cylinder and bearing mounting back in the day. CS-450 and CS-530 as I recall.
