Sounds like you could use an 041 super to go over sometime as a saw to keep since they’re getting rarer
Oddly I've never seen one available near me, although I don't check saws for sale all the time either. But if one did show at a reasonable price I'd snag it....... ;)

What’s reasonable to you for a nice shape one that just needs a go over? I have 2 and they’re both pretty nice

One sold through the bay for three bills shipped back in mid-November that looked in nice shape. I would consider that a fair price for a nice running one. Do I need one, not really, but if one shows up priced low within reasonable pick up range I'd consider buying.Screenshot 2023-12-29 at 04-02-56 stihl 041 super chainsaw eBay.png

Not sure this has been covered and too general for good search.

Has Stihl stopped making square ground? And skip tooth?

Specifically 33RSF and 33RSLF?

I see them from 3rd party sellers but the Stihl site does not list either one. Is it just one of those go to the dealer item?

I was trying price shop and I need a new loop since a large ass piece of wire took 2 cutters off one of my loops. One all the way to a rivot. 😯

I plan to take my loop to a nearby old school dealer Saturday to see if they still spin loops and can replace the 2 cutters.

New guy to the forum, nowhere near new to saws though...been Stihl bronze certed since 2015...LOL heres the last saw i built, a 10mm pin 044, with a modded to fit maccullogh 32" hardnose with stihl full chisel 3/8 050. very mild port work, which will likely get redone this winter for a more agressive port job, also going to be rebuilding an ms661 starting this week, original owner figured out a way to shatter the piston at the wrist pin bosses... that will be getting a worked over Cross/MMSW jug and slug in it... ghere may also be a ms261 coming into the stable as well... we shall see in a few weeks time...LOL that will also need a new slug for sure, possibly a new jug too... havent gotten that far into it yet...

I Also have a ms170, and a mild ported and muff modded ms280 in the stable...as well as a few other brand stragglers...theres a poulan top handle and a vintage yellow right side recoil Mac 1-10...

Must not be working at a Stihl shop anymore being you haven’t gone past the bronze since 2015. They send the guys down yearly where my wife works if they’re in the shop. She had to do the bronze tech class to sell them for some reason. Might just be what the place she works for wanted

I actually do still work at a stihl shop, for the last 8 yrs i have been primarily a lawn/compact tractor mechanic, and working alongside other gold stihl mechanics, and i dont really care about a piece of paper that says i know what i know LOL most of those years i was the sole mobile service guy for lawn/compacts at the shop i was at, so i was on the road 9/10 of the time, couldnt take days to go do training anyways... had too much work... current shop doesnt have mobile service...

Figured out rhe photo issue, was too large, after a resize it fully loaded...

if all goes well on the 661 rebuild this bar will go on that saw instead, and this will get the 20" 3/8 that i have hanging on the wall...LOL
20231012_151240.jpg

Then, after all that, i may have to decide what saws are staying and what to sell, if i build the ms261, i dont think i really need the ms280, as they are similar displacement saws, with the 261 being much more power and less weight....not to mention that would put me at 3 18-20" saws with the 044 on a 20"... all that for a guy who lives in a second floor apartment....LOL

The 270/280 is one of the biggest pieces of junk to ever come out of Stihl, if I recall the 280c was the first attempt at an auto tuning saw

If you muff mod and clean up the ports they run pretty darn good, with a stupid smooth idle... mine is an M-tronic as well, and far out pulls my coworkers carbed 280, so it cant be that bad of a saw....LOL it is one of the first hybrid case saws if memory serves correctly, which did give it a bad rap... along with people not wanting the m-tronic... i dont mind it, as it always runs great, no matter the weather, and i dont have to fart around tuning it every time i use it like my 044....LOL i have no complaints... got it free, threw a fuel solenoid in it and its been flawless ever since...

I agree with this statement, however it was a big step forward for Stihl. When I was at Silver Training back in the day, the Lead Tech told us that one of the engineers actually got the 280 to run on kerosene. Sounds like they played with other fuels as well, unsuccessfully, but they really pushed the limits of those new ideas.

So, heres the ms661 i will be rebuilding.... still not sure what happened, wether the skirt broke and wedged between the piston and case, or the wrist pin boss broke and took the skirt with it... cylinder has minimal damage, mostly scuffs from the wrist pin retainer being set free... my Cross/MMSW cylinder should be here tomorrow, ut this is gonna be a bit of a long term winter project , i do have everything else for the saw aside from a chain cover and spikes, which will be here in a week....

I just had a brainwave looking at those pics i posted earlier.... has anyone come across a stock 661 with that style wrist pin clip? I didnt think anything of it til just now, that stihl (to my knowledge) doesnt ever use those style clips, only the ones like the pic below, which was snagged from a new saw takeoff cyl kit on ebay.. i will have to look over the port edges real close now to see if thats what happened, that clip popped out and started the carnage...

stihl people here keep wanting me to fix 271 291 391s they are getting quotes of near 500.00 at the dealerships to fix them
What's going on with that series?
They seem to fail much faster than the old 290/310/390 series did
Luckily I'm working 12+ hours a day and i had to pass on working on them.

Thats nothing... got a 500i i just quoted 1400+ for, got driven over, electronics got plugged in wrong, fried the generator, the crankcase sensor, they broke the injector, and fried the module all on top of breaking the clutch side case and the brake guts being MIA....

Dropped a huge leaner tree on my 661, well hinge collapsed and it pinched the bar, and like a dumb@$$ i did not unbolt the PH. When I grabbed another saw to finish the backcut and let it chair. As it twisted of the stump it put the rear handle in the ground and busted off the clutch cover and some other stuff.

When I took it in to the Ace for a estimate. He was like probably cheaper to replace. I said look up a 661C R and then the parts needed.

Depending on how you look at it, their mechanic quite half way through. 3 months after I dropped it off I went up there. It was setting on the counter. He told me that they had no way to finish it, all parts were there and they would just charge for parts. I paid the $300 and walked out w/ my saw and all the new parts.

$1400 for 500i I would seriously have to judge the hours on the saw and decide if I buy new or have the down time for a repair. In the automotive world, insurance uses a 75% of value to decide to total.... that saw may be at that mark for sure.

Its ultimately down to the owners decision, but it will be hoping for just buy a new one....doesnt make sense to put $1400 into a $1600 saw... i usually reccommend once youre at 2/3 the cost just get a new one with a warranty...
