Well with both rings……it’s exactly the same lol. I guess it makes sense, solder at 4 corners I guess canceled out any rocking without rings.
Top is 1st measure, left is 2nd, Right one is after installing rings
I've had some serious pitch to the cylinder do to the case gasket not being trimmed properly between the halves.

Unfortunately cylinder is .... well, a slightly worn off..

Everything else is in suprisingly well shape, even the crankshaft is pristine.

Does anyone know what the last year the dual port muffler came on the 046 magnum? This saw I’m working on is serial 133xxxxxx and my Dads is 137xxxxxx. Both have factory dual port mufflers. Also, have y’all seen this Stihl S/N calculator?
https://workshoppist.com/decoding-stihl-chainsaw-serial-and-part-numbers/

The dual port mufflers were still available for the MS460.

The guy's calculator effort is fairly impressive, but has some shortcomings and inaccuracies. He has a Husky version, too. Not much better.

That's pretty awesome. U.S. Chrome and their neighbor operation are about the only places that could re-plate it here. Recent policy changes have made it more difficult for individuals to do business with them directly, though. They're now requiring specific dealer involvement to facilitate orders/transactions -- increasing the prices, of course.

Are there Euro resources for plating?

Ive heard about replating cylinders in italy, fairly close to me.
How much does US plating usually charge per cylinder?

An OEM jug is probably much better than a AM China jug.

Ok thanks PogoInTheWoods. The S/N calculator shows this saw (133909469) as 1995 + or - 1 year. It shows my Dads 046 (137301815) as 1996.
I called Stihl yesterday and gave him those numbers. He said Dads saw showed March 1998, and the 133xxxxxx saw showed May 1996. I’m still unsure because Dad says he really thought he bought that saw around ‘95 (which they weren’t out yet I know). Also, he distinctly remembers the dealer told him that was a new saw that just came out.
I guess the only way to know for sure is to put a degree wheel on it.

Last I heard US chrome was not plating any blind end cylinders .Thinking out loud I think it would be possible to press an iron cylinder liner but it would be a *b-word cutting in the ports .We're talking days of work not hours . I've only ever done one which was a Mac 125 but cutting those ports were easy just time consuming .That BTW was in measured in days indeed .

And that would help determine the date of manufacture how?

Last I heard US chrome was not plating any blind end cylinders
Any chance you could provide the source of that information? They're no longer accepting cylinders from private individuals and now require an approved dealer as a middleman, but I can't imagine them not doing blind cylinders any more unless the margins are just too small for em these days vs. other power sports offerings.

Millenium Tecnologies is an alternative just down the road from US Chrome in Plymouth, Wisconsin. Coincidence? Probably not.

This is another domestic option... https://www.powersealusa.com/

The info for US chrome came from another forum I can't say if it's true or not or weather it's actual chrome or hard nickel silicon .
The conversation was about hot saw engines, over bores which are way above my pay grade but assumed with removable cylinder heads .I can build a better than average woods saw but a racer I would likely not do so good .If it were me ,I'd just find a good cylinder and be done with it .
