Just means your lever is red. Some people claim it's associated with the early runs of that model but I've had late runs of 026s that had the red lever too.

I thought it was a certain time period of Stihl production. My early 044 is black lever, but my 044 purchased in Dec of 92 is a red lever saw. I also believe that most (if not all) of the red lever 044s were 10 mm saws.

Would be interesting if people with original red lever saws (some are Frankinsteins) post either the date purchased, manufactured, or SN. Perhaps then we will know more (unless someone out there already knows the answer).

I have a 12mm 044 that has the red lever. It is an early one, slant fin, s# (1)309 something.
Can't be sure about originality...

I would guess by the # that it is an original. Likely the piston pin size and control lever did not correspond.

Well my stable is going through some changes... dropped the 261, have the 441 on the block for sale... the 192t, 661RCM and the newest member is the 362CM (need to get a wrap handle for it - I like those)

Here is some of the 661 the night I finally got the Sugi bar installed (28")

New to this forum but it has already been helpful for me to decide on a new chainsaw. I just picked up the new version of the ms261 cm. I went to pick up the saw on Friday and discovered that the saw was the 2015 version. The dealer didn't know of the new version. After showing pictures of the difference they called Stihl and discovered for themselves that there was a difference. They found a 2016 ms261 cm at another branch and had it sent to their store. I had ordered it with an 18 inch bar but got it home and pulled off the bar cover and found that it had an 20 inch bar. I decided that I could live with an 20 inch bar. The dealership also threw in a new case. I purchased the 6 pack of oil to get the two year warranty. I got it home and filled it with gas and bar oil (there were no signs of any gas/oil or bar oil in the tanks) I pushed in the decompression valve and it started after about the fifth pull. I thought that was good considering that I had to prime the system. I ran the saw for a minute and shut it down. I took the saw down into the woods to try it out on a dead gum tree that is as hard as nails. The saw started on the first pull. The saw didn't cut through it like butter and I could see a spark once in a while from the silica in the wood but it did a great job compared to any other saw I tried on these trees. I found that I needed to increase the oil flow to the 20 inch bar. On Sunday, I increased the oil flow and when back to drop another dead gum tree. Again, it did a good job, but still need to increase the oil flow to the bar even more. The saw is a huge step up from my 40cc Craftman saw (which I can't complain about) in power but not that much more weight. I am thinking that I might get a 16 inch bar/chain for 80% of my work. Thanks to this forum, I knew about the newer version and about the doubling of the warranty with the purchase of the six pack of oil.

I wish I had more time on it to say... My personal life got all jacked up a month or so after I got the thing. Spent all winter selling my house instead of cutting.

Just in the garage it feels good. Better balance than w/ the 25", or it feels that way to me...
