I installed a new ignition coil on my 7900 today as I have been having a hot start issue, so we shall see if it fixes it. When you guys install a new coil do you strip the end of the plug wire a small bit or is the sharp end of the spring hooked into the wire good enough? It appeared that the one that was on there (not sure if original coil or not) was not stripped on the end so I replicated that.

Sounds more like a fuel delivery or tuning issue to me.

Cool I did it right! Yea it has been being really irritable about starting when hot and especially if I run the tank dry and after refueling it can be a real pain to get fired again, so much so that the last few times I ran it I refueled before running out. The spark plug looks pretty good to me and I am certainly no expert on carb tuning but have been trying to learn, I think I definitely erred on the side of being a tad rich perhaps I should mess with it a bit more.

Edit: Also it would occasionally (pretty rare) just die out of the blue while idling (no slow down or warning just die) and only after being ran for along time, idles fine the other 98% of the time

I have hot start and empty tank restart issues with my Dolmar PS-7900!
I think it's vapor lock, carb can't pump fuel.

Before shutting her off after a long run I let her idle for a minute or so, I also try to remember to restart her at least once within the next couple minutes - that remedies the hot start issue for the most part.

The empty fuel tank restart issue is simple, the moment I hear her revving up due to sucking fumes I shut her down, refuel and start her back up. I give her a couple blips and let her idle to counteract the hot start issue.

It sounds complicated, but it is in fact much simpler than yanking on the starter rope 20-30 times trying to get her to sound off.

I think it might be a carb kit thing, maybe a weak pump diaphragm.

For what it's worth my PS-7900 will idle all day long.
But I have idle issues with my PS-7300, she tends to shut off from idle as if someone pushed the off switch.
I have modified my PS-7300's muffler but can't fully retune because she's got limiter caps on the carb - I hope that to be the only reason for her behavior.
I have to remove the carbs limiters and try retuning.

Rather stay on the rich side!
I tune my Dolmar's right below their coil's rpm limit and I like how they sound and feel like in that rpm range.
Tuned like that my PS-7900 is 4-stroking just right, whereas my PS-6400 is 4-stroking a little too much but still clears up under full load (20" bar almost to fully buried).

That been said, I agree with @Adirondackstihl - it likely wasn't the coil, so don't throw it away just yet.

The box my order came in had a sticker on it saying "Content 25 pcs. portrait Dolmar flag 1.2x3.0 meters".
Does any of You Dolmar dealers know whether this has a part number?
I'd love to get one.

That’s the way I’ve always assembled them.
But every saw I’ve split, had the shield facing the crank.
I’m sure it doesn’t matter much

Every recent Dolmar logo just says "Dolmar".
