Wow. You got some nice saws there Shep. Thanks for your help. I was looking at a clean 510, guy was asking $195.
I think I will wait for a Magnesium cased saw. Thanks for that info. [emoji106]

I paid $200 with brand new top end from @rattler earlier this year. And the reason why it got a new top end was the funky intake boot spring thing. Might take a peak at that.
A genuine adjustable clamp would be better and a preferred system for sure. Certainly an area to keep watch over, I agree.

Any crank cases compatible with a 540? Buddy has one with a striped out bar stud that falls into the oil tank.

The 5100 is something of a sleeper, I saw a running one minus bar and chain sell on Fleabay for $135.00 awhile back. All things being equal, I would prefer an aluminum crankcase over magnesium. I don't use the saw for a living or even for serious firewood cutting so a little extra weight doesn't bother me. In my experience, aluminum is stronger and less likely to crack or corrode than magnesium. Also, this is extremely rare but magnesium will burn if you get it hot enough and there is no way to put it out once started. Nonetheless I'm not getting rid of my 5105, awesome saw!

Looked at the Makita OPE website today and see they finally added a local dealer locator. So far, the only places listed in Kentucky are those that do rentals, mostly Home Depot. What's sad is, they still list the Frankfort Home Depot and that location has been closed for at least 6 years. They also don't show any of the new series chainsaws, just the rebadged Dolmars (510, 5105, 420, etc.) that have been around forever.

Makita, if you're going to do this you need to put some effort into it. Not many people are going to buy a Makita at MSRP online when they can buy an equivalent Stihl/Husky/Echo for less from a local dealer. Otherwise you may as well box up your tiny market share and put it under the tree for the aforementioned brands. I'm still a Dolmartian and I would give a Dolmakita fair consideration if I was in the market for a new saw or came across a good deal. So far, Makita has been doing everything they can to convince me that Echo is a better choice for my OPE needs.

520 there may be others. It can be repaired w timesert or helicoil. timesert is expensive but they make them in std. and oversize.
Shep

He ended up tapping the hole bigger and making a new stud on his lathe. I forget how big he actually went, but lots of red loctite says it’s not a problem anymore.

I know the ps 421/420 (using the red coil here for 421/420) along with the 5105 ..6100..7910 all have RPM limiting . The ps-35 (shown at 13100 rpm ) and the ps-32 (shown at 12800 rpm and on a pale grey coil) ...are they both limited to there RPM by the coils they use to ?
If so...will a ps 421/420 work in practice instead ?

The older model PS-32 and EA3200S were limited to 12,800. Newer versions are use the coil from the PS-35/EA3500SR which uses the 13,100 coil.

Easiest way to tell them apart is the PS-35/EA3500SR coil has a rubber spark plug boot the older style did not.

A 13,100 PS-35/EA3500SR coil will work on a PS-350/PS-420. The wire is a little shorter so it's tight to get it on the plug. Plus they use a smaller boot that the original 420 coil did. I've been using these coils on some PS-350 and 420's because they are quite a bit cheaper and seem to run just as good or better.

Thats very helpful and good news as that tells me the ps -32 I will be dealing with will have the newer coil.
Many Thanks. :)
