What is “birdcage” and SLR? I don’t know what they are. Thanks. BTW!
SLR is a tube inside the muffler can, birdcage is just a baffle with smalish holes in it.
I'd have to look up old pictures to post, they are on a different PC though.

To my understanding:
- the fist picture is actually a CAT muffler
- the remainder of the pictures show a simple birdcage baffle

But, I could be wrong - I have yet to mod a CAT muffler.

I have a EA5000 too.
Last year replaced the CAT muffler to the older non cat muffler. Same reason I did with 7900.
But in the 5000 case it was available non cat..... not need to split.

I retune the carb litle richer....
But I read in the user's manual, the max. rpm 13.800
I think I set 12.500-600.....
May I go up to 13.500-800?
This is my question.

Get her up to the rpm limit, or just shy of it!

Looks more like 16k-
15.750rpm consistently, I just didn't wanna boast. :D

I ran three tanks of fuel through her cutting up a couple dozens orchard trees, she is a great limber/brancher.

No, I didn't look into why she is turning those rpm's.

As promised! Wow! What a saw.
Beautiful saw!

She didn't even blink, she can take much more load than that 20" B&C.
Try lowering the rakers a lick with that setup, just don't forget to hold on real good when You give the chain a new try.

What wood is that?
It is either some hard and dense species or the chain is not optimal for this saw.

I love this saw model, the whole line from 64xx , through 73xx , to 79xx!

The wood is white oak. This particular log is loaded with knots and yes, that makes it very hard and dense. I must say the saw was a pleasant surprise. It easily compares to the 500i. The chain is new Stihl RS 3/8 pitch. This saw is lighter , I believe than the 500i. Very powerful yet handy machine.
I never picked a 500i up so I do not know how it compares weight wise.
I also never ran a 500i so I do not not how it compares power and handling wise.

But, I own and run five of these Dolmar's (see my sig) and they are hands down the cats meow!!!

If Your white oak is anything like my turkey oak or even harder, then YES it will make an new out of the box RS slip instead of bite.
I have a couple RS loops, they are not my favorite chains.
Oregon LGX and Dolmar 099 are my favorite bucking oak logs - full complenent, full chisel, round filed.

Try touching up the chain to give it its edge back, and lower the rakers a tiny little bit - should make a noticeable difference.

Have fun, stay safe! :)

You are right!
This saw does not perform well.... I am agree, looks like chain problem. ( dull or raker to high)
Especially this is 7900! The 7900 must eat that piece of wood.

Check my old 6400 long ago.... same hard wood (oak)

I loved the LGX , but I am really impressed with the EXL...
But nowadays I prefer and use mostlysemi chisel chains....... Oregon DP and one of my favourite the Carlton A2 .
Based upon my experience for felling, better choice the full chisel but if once a wood hit the ground....better the semi chisel...
I think it is depens of the duty what kind of chain better to use...

For me semi-chisel feels much slower and power hungry than full-chisel - both round filed the same way with an Archer FastFiler roller guide.

True, semi-chisel "can" continue cutting even when dull - but at the expense of increased PH and bar wear.
I greatly prefer round filed full-chisel, even if I have to sharpen the chains I use more often due to skidded dirty logs.

I used to say that I would bet with anyone in a blind test. :-)
Really blind test.
Eye patch, same saw, same bar...only the chain different.
Perfectly sharp semi chisel vs. regular full chisel....
Few cuts...
Trust me.... it won't be easy to make the decision... :-)

I wanted to add that this tree has more knots in it than any I’ve cut up before. The saw(chain) will pull itself thru portions of that trunk and then hit a hard spot and stop. You have to nudge it thru then to keep it moving. I would compare the two saws but my 500i is ported. And it runs real good, Wouldn’t be a fair comparison.

Port it and see how it runs

I found a video about muffler mod.. what i do like.
From 11:43 , a Hq 365 with a quite large secund outlet besides a regular one...
It is huge diameter all together for the outgoing gas, I think...
Mine larger outlet what I made on the 7900 muffler- and scared a little bit maybe it will be too large- it is much
smaller than this. :-)

I got a PM from one of the coolest dudes on OPE offering advice on what to expect from the saw. It led to a couple try’s at sharpening this chain up to keep it from skipping over the log. While I over did it, the results were more like what was expected. It now requires considerable effort to hold on the saw and not get pulled into the log. I’m always thankful when folks offer helpful advice or suggestions. Almost everybody here is on the bus when it comes to being helpful. It sure beats the alternative.
