There’s a Timber Tuff chain grinder on my local FB marketplace for $50. Some type of Oregon knockoff, I reckon. Looks like they’re $130ish new.

Thoughts?

Timbertuff makes a variety of inexpensive logging tools, often sold around here at Menard's or the farm stores. They are cheap tools with grinding wheels to match. So if you are looking for that type of tool, it could be a good price, compared to retail.

The full sized one looks like many of the Oregon/Tecomec clones that sell anywhere from $70 to $160 on eBay. The smaller one has more plastic, and is more similar to the 'Nick the Grinder', or 'SharpBoy' models that sell for $50 to $100.

Not a CL ad, but an eBay review:

'You get what you pay for . This sharpener is probably as good as an of the ones you would pay two to three time this price to get . very good quality and dones what it is designed for . don"t waste your money buying that cheap flimsy junk from harbor freight .This sharpener is very well worth the price of less than $100 dollars spent.'

So, don't buy that cheap Harbor Freight junk, but buy this cheap no-brand Chinese junk, and don't buy that more expensive Oregon one, because you get what you pay for?

Philbert (confused)

Metal Chinese junk better than plastic Chinese junk?

I see that you recently joined. There have been a lot of threads on these inexpensive grinders here, and on Arboristsite. They are definitely cheaper, in every meaning of the word. Inconsistent quality is a key issue: some guys are happy with them; some are happy for the price; some find the need to do lots of 'tweaks'/adjustments; some just do not want to pay $200 for a better grinder.

I was challenged to try the really cheap grinders (typically $30 or less) and found that if you go that route, it is better to get the simplest versions, plastic or metal, as there is less to go wrong. Fewer moving parts to wobble or flex. But the other thing is that cheap grinders come with cheap grinding wheels, and that is the part that does the cutting. Cheap wheels sometimes lead to grinder dissatisfaction. But again, if you know what you are getting into, that one good be a good deal.

This is the best deal I know of on one of the better quality, basic, grinders (new) - comes with the better quality Italian wheels:

Used grinders can be a better deal if the price is right, they are in good condition, all the parts are there, etc.
