Are those crawler skidders very efficient? Or mostly used just in the steepest and hardest to reach places? Curious because it seems as if they would be much slower than a wheeled skidder..
How fast do you want to go, lolAre those crawler skidders very efficient? Or mostly used just in the steepest and hardest to reach places? Curious because it seems as if they would be much slower than a wheeled skidder..
Wow, pretty fast, but I shouldn't be surprised because there's little reason for a tracked machine to be much slower than a wheeled one. I'm used to watching my dad's little track loader that does about 2.5mph in fast mode. How fast do you want to go, lol

That was 30 years ago, I’ve slowed down sense then. They are pretty efficient, they can maneuver around in tight places a little quicker but on long skids a wheeled skidder could be faster. A lot of our ground here is too steep for wheeled skidders, and the tracked D5 does better in deep snow.
Time is money lolHow fast do you want to go, lol

Yeah probably too fast, lol. I used to put it in neutral going down steep hills like that because 3rd wasn’t fast enough. I think a skidder would be more cost effective over all, unless you just needed a cat for steep ground, cat works out better for most of our jobs because we can get right to the trees where as with a skidder you’d have to pull a lot of winch line. Big difference in purchase price too, 527 is more than double the price of a comparable skidder here. We are running a D5 TSK but they are close to the same price as a 527.@logger nate I’m not going to lie, that dozer was moving a lot faster than I expected it would! We have some very steep ground around here too, and crawlers used to do all the logging until wheel skidders came along. However, dozers still have to cut the hills for the skidders to get around. The concept of a dozer like those 527’s seems great, I just wonder if it would be cost effective in the long run (fuel, speed, under carriage rebuild cost, etc)
Like the tractor international, what model ?

Hi,
sorry for my late replay. Its a IHC 856 - the one with a turbo and intercooler if I remember correctly. Very nice sound, but its now gone because of an engine failure.
Meanwhile my Buddy bought a new machinery. I like to share some Fotos:
And we also have to build some fances against deers. So the deers cant eat the new planted trees.
Getting a little dirty in this wet times ...
... and very Icy

What is the brand of that skidder?
