It is sad to see, but I appreciate Ryan giving us a view of this. It's important for people to see the aftermath of catastrophic fires so
that they'll make plans to help prevent them in the future.

No kidding JJ. I dont work directly for Wayne but work on his trucks and do engine work on the side. He is a stand up guy with a top notch crew, I have never heard anything bad about the guy. His crew was busting there asses trying to get equipment out for days in the worst conditions, he takes excellent care of his guys and they take care of him. Im sure he has good insurance, this will slow him down a bit but he will keep his guys working .
Again , this is just Iron (expensive) . I know of two families that we are close with that lost everything. I took my sons best friend who's house burnt down in the Riverside fire shopping and bought him all new fishing gear that got burnt up.
These fires, hurricanes, tornadoes and other natural disasters keep me in check when I complain about minor things in life.
Ryan

If it were my personal ground, I'd do a quick scan for early defect, broken tops, conks, broken ground or depressions where water could accumulate later, and signs of root rot or Laminate disease.

I'd shoot for a stem count per acre that meets a median light and water penetration goal for the site. We did a couple of jobs for BLM on the west side of Burnt Mountain where they wanted 40-45 stems
per acre due to the prevailing winds that hit the site regularly. We did another job for them east of Tioga creek where they only wanted 30 stems/acre or so because of the drier conditions and lesser winds.

That’s what we do but the first trip through is basically to put rows in at the rough spacing we need to work in the future. This trip through will be a more radical thin probably around 200 maybe 210 depending on what the stand will need right now our rotation is north of 90 years old average.

This is a rough idea everything changes from the cab but we don’t mark ahead of time everything is operator choice defect will be very low when done.

A little patch that got a super light thinning in the past, out of that clump what would you take?

Looks like a great area for a tree stand in the future.

Cutting up power poles and any waste wood to fit into the dump trucks. And when they are loaded, I’d cut the overhanging limbs and what-not. And I bucked some for the self-loader. A little overkill for a faller, but it is what ODOT wants us to do.
Sad stuff there @NWWrench
I am aware of at least six outfits down here that have lost one or more sides.

Back when I was hand falling full time this would have been a dream paying site
Bearing in mind most of our stuff is so small pecker poles

and You would have had a cut list for as many 24ft’s as possible

Your doing a good service there hat off to you

it’s hard to grasp the vastness of your lands and the destruction that’s caused
By these wild fires I come from a wet climate and this is unreal
I can’t imagine The loss of trees , wildlife , machinery and properties

stay safe

I can't believe those guys clearing the fire debris from the road aren't wearing some kind of mask. Breathing that smokey air is like smoking all of the cigarettes, many people involved with this clean up will have lung cancer in the future.

I wish I could cut short logs like that all the time but getting our mills here to take a load of short wood is like hens teeth anymore. If I can mix them into a load of long wood or even have just a shell of long wood with all shorts in the middle without an issue. My cut list runs from 16’-40’ +1’ of trim top diameter of 5” minimum under the bark for domestic and export is 7” 26-41 +1’ of trim.

Its amazing how devastation brings out the best in humanity. Our community has really come together to help each other out. Thanks to all the people that post pictures in this thread and what you do to contribute in times like these. My hats off to all of you and the volunteers and front line workers.
Hypersaws, keep and eye out for our front line engine from the Portland airport working a fire near Glide area. It has been gone going on two weeks, it started out on the fire in Talent. I maintain all the fire and Crash trucks at the airport. I wish we could sent the whole fleet of Oshkosh Strikers out, are biggest truck holds 4500 gallons of water and 400 gallons of foam.
Keep up all the good work guys.
Ryan

Had a local group pass thru today donating lunches and drinks for anyone that didn't get a lunch or drinks, all out of there own time and money/ fuel. It simply amazes me the wonderful people that will go out of there way to help in time of need. There are still many good people out there. God bless them all

Question for all you timber fellers. I see some guys carrying a aluminum felling wedge which the narrow end is modified into a grip. What are they using them for? Im assuming for setting wedges? Are they not carrying a axe?

Beating wedges when you dont need to swing an axe. I have a hardhead wedge that i modified instead of aluminum.

Yeah, pretty much. You can set your wedges if you throw an axe around or something. In straight-dump jobs, some guys just carry that and one wedge. They actually drive a wedge in smaller wood pretty well. A little weight savings.
