I'm very sorry to hear that. I lost three pets last year so I definitely know what it's like. Two of them were really old and it was their time but it still sux.
My pups mom Kitty was 12+, but she always seemed spry - until she suddenly did not, and she deteriorated fast. :(

This year I watched my cousins Golden Retriever of 17 die in my arms.
He was in bad health for years and it only got worse - they did not allow an "assisted end" due to religious beliefs.
He died in gripping death cramps for two days and one night, it must have been excruciating for him - just thinking about it drives tears into my eyes. 😢

I'm not sure what is funnier, how proud Karl is after gutting his toy to remove the squeaker, or the look on my son's face knowing that he gets to clean up the stuffing!
Looks like the dog is thinking..."OK human, that was simple, give me something challenging to work on!!" :D

You nailed it! I wish I had spent more time training him when he was a pup. He is smart and was easy to teach until he got to be about a year old. Now he is stubborn and gets an attitude if he doesn't get what he wants.

Karl sez: "Firewood Hoarder, I cannot believe what your son did! I thought you raised him better than that!"

This was after our weekend morning walk last Saturday, pup was tired, didn't wanna pose for pictures.

Hint, pup with collar equals "walk".
She doesn't wear a collar at home, nor is she tied up or locked down.
She is free to roam her/our yard including adjoining garden, orchard and several smaller fields that border one on each other.
She sleeps inside the house, has her own room & bed - but is allowed up on all furniture if she so desires. :)

She's got a good life! It's nice for a dog to have a safe place to roam as they please. Fortunately our rural home allows our dog to do the same, but most are not that lucky.

I know of two close to me neighbor dogs that are confined to a small box/room 24/7 and the owners seem fine with that. :(

If my pup decides she wants to sleep in my bed then that is where she will spend the night - her happiness is my happiness. 🥰

Michigan leash law. We would find our dog in dog jail. I use an in ground fence, he has about an acre and half to run free. Let a dog run unchecked around here is asking it to be shot (especially during hunting season).

There is not a single person in my life that I care more about than the well being of "not my dog" pup (she is my moms dog!)!!

In Europe it is illegal to "chain up" a dog, boxing one in is a grey area.
Here pups are obligated to be "chipped" which I consider good as there are plenty dog owners that do not properly socialize nor train their dogs so the chip clearly connects a mischievous dog to its owner.

My pup rarely wanders of outside of our property which makes me happy.
Though when she does she is looking for company and I can't fault her for that - I am not at home at least 9 hours a day and my mom just says "she can entertain herself" which she does at times.

Luckily my pup is fairly smart and she learns fast.
She is also NOT mischievous so I do not have to worry she'll do anything bad.

People are stupid!
I told my mom NOT to get another dog - she insisted she needed/wanted one.
Now she "can't entertain the dog 24/7" and expects the pup to entertain herself - that doesn't work that way though.

A dog is a never growing up child, do not get one if You won't invest the ample time required to tend to it!
If I could I'd spend 24 hours a day with my pup.

No meds nor human company can achieve what a prolonged cuddle with Your pup can! :icon12:

Yes, “a safe place to roam” varies by locality, most certainly. We live on a fairly large farm, so our pup never leaves our property. Being a beagle and prone to following her nose (sometimes into trouble) she also wears a Halo collar that uses GPS and corrective feedback to make sure she doesn’t cross the boundaries, and so we can keep an “ eye” on her when we can’t physically see her.

Your acre and a half is still a nice run area, certainly enough for a dog to putter at will. I feel sorry for dogs that spend the majority of their lives in crates or in small pens out in the far corner of the yard with little or no attention. Dogs deserve better treatment than that, and most crave at least occasional attention from their human “pack”.
