My Father used to say the only person who never makes a mistake is the guy who does not get out of bed in the morning, and he is making the biggest mistake of all!

He wasn't holed up with a three-time All-American track star like I am.

I agree with a post earlier...perhaps we can blame all kinds of things on am products. ..but likely if proper rings were used on this piston this would not have been an issue. So..am or oem...proper rings need to be used. Now...I have seen am pistons lose their positioning pins...and score a cylinder. But that's not the issue here. Sorry al...this is a rough break. You do some of the prettiest grinding I have ever seen ...shame to lose the 5 hours here...I hear ya.

The trouble is the seller misled him regarding what was in the saw, and based on that I think most of us would have fallen into the same trap. The irony is that Al's insistence on using better rings is what led to the problem.

However, as Matt points out, with an inferior piston, there may have been other issues down the road.

My experience tells me that most people have no clue what's going on inside their saw (and in their mouths....besides the point) which simply means proper diagnosis is needed independent of what sellers and owners say....

Anyone doing saw repair needs to understand that little mistakes make huge $$ consequences. Al knows this...and it won't break him... but it IS discouraging....sorry Al.

If a guy that builds several saws can miss the piston not being oem then I'm sure a novice could.

I doubt very seriously anyone was intentionally mislead.

It's not the pistons fault or the seller or the rings.

Every once in a while we miss things and *s-word happens. I've done it and I'll do it again.

Are thicker rings better? More drag? Or just a cheaper design because they can't manufacturer them at smaller tolerances.
I'm not sure the reason for it but almost all of the really cheap pistons will have thicker rings.
You can get cabers or oem rings to replace them but you have to measure for the right ones.

I've only used a few golf pistons with the rings that it came with and they work just fine so far.

Firewood/weekend warrior saw will never know the difference but I don't know how long one would last in a production saw.

I've got a few 660's in the woods with Hyway pistons that have been going a while but I feel the new Hyway pistons are pretty good,I like the rings a lot.

So the AM ring was 1.45mm thick. The caber and OEM were 1.15mm thick.

I didn't notice when I slipped them on.

So rings fluttered. Ripped up the transfers till they caught.
I did the same thing a few years ago with a 361 golf piston. Went home, came back the next day with Cabers and tossed them on. It was one wonky tune and ran even weirder LOL! Isn't that just the strangest run-in lol. Mine spun those babies around more than a few times. Half pins big lands

Cheaper piston material I suspect. Other benafits are better heat disapation, longer wear again based on material. One added benifit or kill in some peoples eyes is the added weight slows down the engine.

I tossed a farmertec in a 576xp i have, had to clean up the jug and had a couple of scores that went through the nik, runs like a champ. Dont really care too much if it fails because I was looking at a complete oem top end anyway

Try some bronze yellow braze should work and large 3 stone hone. Check your work with a ring as it progresses. It work on iron core or sleeves. I was very lucky. No cylinder marks or damage. No port work stock 47mm jug.
