The one that gained weight probably realized they were getting less, ate their portion and went after some of the others... :D

We have a couple of outside cats that are that way, one eats really fast so they can edge the other out of what they have left.
When we first cut back, the lighter {and smarter} one was freaking out and protesting regularly. Now he's good with it. His brother (dumber one) didn't seem to notice then suddenly started complaining regularly. We get schadenfreude out of it. He'll get over it. Doesn't buy the groceries.

And this is why You want a female feline.
Even sterilized and very well fed their instinct makes them hunt mice (and pretty much anything else small enough)!

Yep. Our oldest cat that died last year was hell on mice, birds, and ground squirrels.
We once had a feral cat my sister brought home from an army camp site.
That cat, a female, hunted, killed and partially ate rats!
