What makes it so special? I read tons of post praising the saw and it seems very sought after, I'm wondering what the appeal is? I am going to look at a couple non running 044 later this week, asked an old buddy who logs if he had any old saws and he said he thinks he has a couple 044's.

Post pics if you got em too. Thanks.

They are no big deal. Just pack them up and send them my way.

You probably wouldn’t like them anyways.

The cylinders have real good timing numbers from the factory, and the mufflers have a nice, large exit.

The reciprocating assembly is also very light - that mix ends up creating a good running saw. They also
have good compression for a stock saw. It's just a good package.

Are they relatively lightweight and compact? I've never handled one but I've read about how the 036 was a compact saw for it's displacement.

I think a stock 10mm wrist pin 044 has a stock 036 beat for power-to-weight ratio. One thing that really
helps is to replace the stock 10mm wrist pin flywheel with the lightweight MS-440 flywheel. It helps spool-
up quite a bit.

The 10mm 044 was designed to be Stihl's premier professional forestry saw - the buzzwords in North America
at the time in forestry were "commercial thinning" and that's what the 044 is perfect for. I was reading some
Stihl literature and I think by the end of 1993, they had sold 7 million 044s worldwide.

Great info. I'm curious on what I'll find. I remember seeing my buddies saws way back when we used to hang out but I never paid them any attention other than seeing 044.

10mm 044 Is the only Saw I have ever owned that I didn’t feel the need to have ported. To me they are a factory hot rod. And that’s really quite a nod to them seeing as I’ve had over 50 saws ported

Like the pro’s said above, they are just a factory hot rod.

The cylinders don’t gain much from porting. They gain from light machine work a bunch. The exhaust roof is super flat and fast venting, they figured out how much they could go without catching a ring at the factory.

The rotating assembly is a bit lighter with the crank/rod/pin being somewhat smaller. The mufflers generally came with a generous opening as well, from the factory.

I just sold one in the Add section. All they need is the squish band cleaned up and squish tightened to 20 and they will pull around 185 psi. Pretty much perfect for a saw that size. Add a DP front or a second deflector, advance the timing, and let her rip.
