i got a 55 and a 61 with a 266 xp top end.
Well, I did forget to tell you that I have a 353 and Santa just gave me a fine running 350 to back it up. Believe it or not, the 350 runs just as nicely and is equal in appearance to the 353. I really am amazed at the fuel economy of both. I usually wear out and need a break before they run out of a tank of fuel. Gasp!

I bought my 55 Rancher new about 18 years ago. It has been a great saw the only problems I have had with it is the fact that is has so much compression that eats rewinds. I am very surprised that it doesn't have a decomp on it. If I ever pull it apart I think I will put a decomp in. When I bought my 044 the guy threw in a 51 parts saw. According to him the saw still ran good but he broke several fins off the flywheel. So it pretty much needs a flywheel, rewind and a couple other small parts and I could have another running saw.

I ripped the rope out of mine weeks ago. Got lucky had enough left to tie a new knot in and back in service

From what Ive been told if it says air injection and decomp closed. If it says rancher and no decomp open. There might me more info on previous pages.

Mine is a 55 Rancher with no Decomp but it says (or used to say) air induction. It's been a hell of a good saw. It' cut a hell of a lot of firewood but now it gets used for cleanup and edge milling. It's never been apart and I bought it new. Been thinking about opening it up and freshening it up.

Our's wasn't much different @ all from the open port cly. I can say the difference is marginal, stock. Video's are earlier in the thread.

I just went out to the shop and put a rewind and spark plug in my free Husky 51 project saw and to my amazement it fired right up. Now I get to go shopping! I have to replace all the little parts I stole from it to fix my 55 Rancher. This saw is so filthy I may tear it apart to clean it up and try to learn a few things.

As to IDing closed port 55's, yes they were only on the non Rancher, 'air injection' decomp saws but still relatively few and far between.

As has been already mentioned, the cylinder will have a row of pluses cast in along the top of the transfer bulge, clearly visible just below the decomp. Pretty obvious with the saw in your hands but often hard to discern from ebay/cl pics.
Most seem to fall between 97 to 99 manufacture dates and say 51cc on the top cover epa tag instead of 53cc (some don't specify at all).
Also a smaller number of cooling fins cut away for the air inj plenum, 6 fins remaining on the cp and 3 on the op but this can't be seen without removing the cover.

Seems like a disproportionate number of the cp saws I run across have been cooked, not sure why that is...

I used to think decomp = cp. for the most part it's true but I had one that was on a 46mm rancher.

I think the 55cp are known as EPA models. I bet the carbs were too lean.

carb is damn touchy but already got 5 tanks through it, nice saw but don't let it idle on the ground long it continuously pumps oil

dont let it sit in floor board of your truck it will oil the floor down also even if you dont run it lol
