Just curious. When i start filing a 325 chain with a 3/16 file. Should i switch to a smaller file 5/32 when half way or so back on cutter.

I've never had too filing .325, the cutters are near the same size as standard 3/8 in most cases. It would give to much hook IMO, but these things are best done by trial and error. You just need to know what you want your cutters to look like, if you know that you will find out what you need to get them there. Good filing requires a steady hand and an insightful mind.

Get a fresh file. Stop cooking your cutters on the grinder. Change chain brands to a softer metal like oregon etc.

Go back to the grinder and just barely nip the cutting surfaces with 2 or 3 LIGHT touches of the wheel.
Just exposing fresh metal.
It may take a file after that's done.

You can grind out the hardened portion of the tooth back to softer metal. Just be careful not to over heat your cutter again or you're right back to where you started.

If you don't have a chain grinder, you can accomplish the same thing with a dremel or handheld angle-grinder. You just need to barely touch the cutter to remove the hardened layer and you can return to hand-filing.

Holy. I thought that was just a joke about the hand grinder.

Depends on the chain when you get down to nubs I've stepped down in size or I've stayed at the original I run the 325 mostly the last chain was husq varna brand and I went down to the next size smaller
