What experiences have folks had with the rotary "surface prep" tools?

I have the Bauer version from Harbor Freight, I understand they no longer offer the Bauer but have replaced it with Hercules?

The original Bauer 4" 40 grit drums were great, but again they are no longer available. The Hercules drums are a bit more aggressive but do seem to break down a little faster. I use it primarily for cleaning up old bars and for that purpose it is a fantastic tool. Even the worst looking bars will be sparkling in less than 10 minutes, and I can get 8 or 10 bars or more polished up with a single 40 grit drum. I have some finer drums as well, but for the bar the 40 grit leaves a nice brushed finish like many factory brushed bars.

I can't find the photos of the rusty bars right now, but unless the pitting is quite deep it really only takes a few minutes to make a bar shine. At you can see here, the etching on this McCulloch hardnose bar was quite unaffected.

They do a good job, just a matter how much time and effort you put into it, didn’t really spend much time on this one at all wasn’t looking for a like new finish , I have a Eastwood and only got it because it was 25% off at the time, the other brands will do the same thing for less,IMG_0465.png
