I just use some old inner tube to block off the muffler and the four bolts that hold the fuel injector assembly, tighten the spark plug, plug the decomp, then I put the piston to TDC and go through the impulse nipple with the vacuum pump. Have to take the tank assy off to do it. Dont really need to put the piston to TDC, its just what I'm used to doing. The intake boot can not be checked this way, but its checked easily enough with the tank and throttle body removed to get the rubber in there

So stihl in the white bottle is regular oil and the grey bottles are synthetic hmmmm
50:1 is 3.2 oz per gallon and 40:1 is 2.6, half an oz doesn’t seem like much does it.

For 30 plus years we just used whatever two stroke mix we had, more than often the oil was good for chainsaws, boats, weed eaters, lawn mowers and anything that was two stroke or on sale. Never had a single engine failure.

in 2000 I switched to quicksilver 2 stroke oil and never had an issue till I joined OPE then reading through a bunch of threads figured I’d better switch to the Jaso rated oils, wether it’s stihl, Husky, jonsered or any brand really.

Bottom line I wouldn’t think oil has much to do with anything, I mix at 40:1 as a little more oil doesn’t hurt performance. I think the move to 50:1 was probably more epa motivated than what is good for the engine.
I also talked to some racers that mix modern day engines at 32:1.

hopefully someone can figure out what caused the engine failure.

Getting some new toys for the 500! Also got a wrap handle and max flow kit for it. I’m excited any tips on handling a ported saw that’s different than a stock saw?

Go up one tooth on the drive gear, take a few swipes off the rakers of the chains you run with this saw, and make sure the oiler is 100%. I'll make sure the pin is pushed in and turn it up for you. I should be turning the cylinder this weekend, parts are on order, no idea on eta for them.

Still going to have another few seconds of scotchbrite AFTER we’re finished porting and spinning for base & squish. Good news is that we don’t need a replacement cylinder, and made the right call just ordering a replacement piston assembly.

@TINYHULK , did you find the original muffler cover ?

I did not. I took it into the ups store with me to have sent to you but you didn’t get it so I’m betting I set it down when I was shuffling around with the parts to make it easier for them to package. Did you order another one for me?

No, not yet
I was hoping you would have found yours.

up to you, but personally I like the way a modified single outlet, stock front cover 500i runs & sounds. Plenty of power without the obnoxiously loud exhaust noise. I can see about getting you a replacement or we can just run the barkbox ?

Definitely do the modification as you see fit for the stock cover. If anything I’ll put my bark box on one of my bosses 500i’s and put a stock cover on mine. If you can order one and get it in time before the saw is completed and shipped then I’ll gladly pay for it

I'd be curious how much information is available to the consumer or will it be used for Stihl marketing in the future but, that is not what this thread is about....
Back to our regular scheduled programing of the rebuild of the 500i
Sorry..... carry on with the 500i curious how the porting will be attacked on this build?

With some experimental experience ............. I've done a few and am VERY happy with mine.
I might copy mine, or I might just try a little something ................. waiting to see how the lathe puts everything.

An extremely generous member here, who can identify himself if he wishes to has graciousely volunteered to donate his stock muffler cover to this endeaver, THANK YOU !!!!!

The muffler mod is more interesting to me than the porting, as having ported a few already, I'm sure @TINYHULK wont be dissapointed with the cylinder, but I've got a barkbox to beat and were going to let him be the judge in performance

Aren't they overrated anyway?

I'm guessing that the design filters out the upper harmonics giving it a bassier tone. Plus a single outlet is less surface area for the sound to travel from. 3 ports might as well be a megaphone.

@Moparmyway thats awesome! Thank you all for the support and knowledge you have given me! I can’t wait to get it back and run it! I have a new Sugihara 28in bar for it and can’t wait to run it. Just took down my biggest recorded tree, a 7ft dbh pin oak and I was thinking about this saw the whole time lol
