But if he is running 50:1 and it is mtronic with no mods, he can’t be at fault if it is not oiling well enough...

Depends. He probably got his 300 hours out of the saw, which I believe is close to the posted service life.

32:1 might get 400 or 1000. Who knows?

I can agree to being at his service life, but bearing and top end failure to me isn’t a service it’s a complete overhaul, especially when dealers aren’t servicing for a fair price, they are directing to new and they aren’t worth fixing. Shoot if got 036s around with hours like that on it or more and they are in the same top end and bearings just needed seals and rubber replaced.

I do t mind doing bearings if I could get a good deal on seals kits. I hate having to dump $30 into seals on each one of these just to get a clean crank case seal lol.

I bet the piston in that saw weighs 30% more than one from an 036. The crank isn't going to last as long if the parameters aren't changed

I don't have the specs for the ignition module, but IF it's rev-limited and mtronic is running lean to meet emissions standards, your ear will never know and the bottom end will be running hot and dry, will it not? The local Stihl shop won't carry mtronic versions.

Potentially but let’s think this through. If it is rev limiting, Mtronic, mixed appropriately to 50:1 and running lean, isn’t that an issue with manufacturing and engineering and not operator?

Again he is just irritated and I don’t blame him. He isn’t claiming that it hasn’t been used at all, just feels they should last a little longer if following all the required operating procedures produced by Stihl. I wish they had a robust version of the 362 lol.

I’ll break it down and show pictures of the bearings. If possible I’ll replace the proprietary bearing with new and the general bearing with a metal caged slacker bearing. Hopefully that will make it last longer this go around.

Is it the mains or the wp bearing that is failing?

It has to be the mains both sides of WP feel tight or show no signs of play. Additionally WP does not look like it has gotten hot.

Ok was only asking because they did just update the wrist pin and bearing for longer service life. As far as the rest, I would try to point him into better oil. I understand cost is a primary matter but comparing opti to a good oil looking at flash point alone is about half of what Ultra/motul/etc is.

Oh yeah he is going to Stihl silver going forward. If I had to guess on these it has to be either manufacture or fuel/oil related. I’m guessing fuel and oil. I’ve got plenty of personal saws running 40:1 Stihl silver and have never had this kind of stuff happen.

Exactly. Perhaps a better chance with a manually-tuned carb set to 300 rpm richer than max?

I’d agree I didn’t ask him if the 362 regular lasted longer than the Mtronic. If it did I can tune him rich and see if that goes longer. Don’t need the max RPM for firewood lol.

Run the saws at 40:1 ,it will allow the main bearings to last twice or more hours of run time. This 50:1 ratio is too little oil for real work saws, it is ok for most firewooders and occasional users but lacks enough lube for the bottom ends of heavy use PRO saws . The lean mix may burn cleaner to make the EPA happy but at a cost to the bearings.

I agree with Mr Basher. Running a richer tune will hinder performance and fuel mileage. The bearings need more oil, not fuel.
There have been problems mentioned running Stihl silver on ratios richer than 50:1 though. Being an fb rated oil, it lacks detergents that prevent carbon buildup, so that may need to be addressed further (in the oil thread).
Lol

By no means is this intended to become a oil thread and I’ll Shut it down if it does. I think it’s pretty dead now. I’m moving him to non mtronic and tuning rich or telling him to run 40:1 in his Mtronic saws

Incan grab a picture but the exhaust side looks good other than the top looking like it took a mini jack hammer to it

And it was running when it came in. I assume those cuts are from the chunks of ring and piston that went floating around in the transfers and crank case when it fried.
