Yeah the pin is still there. I appreciate everyone’s help on this one. In about an hour I’ll take some close ups of it to see if there is anything that pops out at you all.

Vastly different engine in about every way, but FWIW, GM says piston erosion or fractures between ring lands are caused by use of non Dexos approved oil.

I see probably 2, 3 of these a month on the small turbo engines.

Your piston looked fairly familiar to what I see at work.

Well I’ve already got him to no longer use the opti stuff. And pushing him to go to 40:1 for the next new saw. We are going to keep track of hours in this next one

When I used to work on bigger engines I saw something similar with faulty rings the rpm would be too much for the ring material and no amount of oil could stop that. But that was 30 years ago.

The piston crown on the exhaust side looks like there were too hot temperatures and the area between the upper ring and the crown started melting.
This could cause the ring to get stuck between piston and cylinder. I only knew this kind of damage due too much pre ignition or too low octance fuel.

Carbon jacking the rings out?
I'll second that.
I'm no expert on oil. I do see MORE carbon build up with those who use Stihl Silver/ultra oil in their equipment. You are on the right path. He's got to change what he's doing currently. Have a look in one of his running saws. If it looks similar, run some seafoam thru it and give him some options. Red Armor, Saber, Yamalube etc. Carbon does not dissipate heat very well. Lots of variables here. Changing oil may only be one piece of the puzzle. He'll appreciate you being proactive and hopefully you can save a saw or two from an untimely death. PM me or call if you need anything. Rich Flagg 864-991-1330

He isn’t using Stihl yet, he is using opti2 or whatever it is called as stated earlier in the post.

Carbon build up is greater on the pto side. Farther from the flywheels fresh air. Looks like the ring may have frozen in place over there and caused the flywheel side of the ring to "bulge" and hang. Just my .02
