Hi there, I am in the process of seeing if I can acquire a Stihl ms230 because it's leaking chain oil from the front of the tank between the inside where the bar fits exhaust side and the exhaust, there is a vent or plug missing. The saw is no longer useable but is there a vent I can buy to sort it or another way to solve the leaking problem.

Thanks

There should be a little orange or reddish plug that caps that oil passage on the bar side of the muffler . I don’t remember if Stihl offers a replacement plug, but I thread a short set screw with loctite in the hole. I’ve never had one come out, but you must take care not to thread it in too deep, or it obstructs the oil flow.

Thanks for that I shall make enquiries if not then a screw will be fitted.

A 1/4 x 3/8 set screw from the hardware store can be substituted, but since it is larger in diameter you should tap the hole first to prevent cracking the plastic case.

I have the opposite problem. One of my MS180 saws won't Oil. I have put in new (AM) then OEM from 025 OEM . Cleaned the galleys from both directions. Did quite a bit of reading but Stihl no oil .. It sits somewhere in a box under only a forgotten memory knows where.
My last thought after it was stashed was I had installed it 180 * from right. Tank and pickup clean.
I assumed someone would post a clue that would point me to the cure. If some one has an Idea I won't be able to follow through until I get it found and dug out, but certainly will be appreciated and remembered.
Thanks in Advance

I’ve already had some that wouldn’t oil until removing and reinstalling the oiler, almost like it had slid and wasn’t lined up with the outlet hole. But they can be very finicky.

There should be a diagram cast into the plastic frame of the saw showing the proper orientation of the pump. Check the holes inside the saw housing to get the correct depth of the pump. Too shallow or too deep, the passage holes don't line up and the pump doesn't work.

I did do a lot of double checking these possible problems and figgered to set it aside and come back to it later. I guess 4 or 5 years is later May have to dig it out and try again Thanks guys.
