Ok, I have a question about the early 044 10mms. I know the "ooh-ahh" factor of the fabled KS jug, but how come? I have an earlier slant fin Mahle jug 10mm and it rips. It stays with my 046 and seems to eat better than newer ms440s. So is the KS even that much better than the earlier Mahle equipped 044 10mms?

Because they are rare and came on the coveted 10mm saw, mostly.

People love nostalgia. Same way stories exist about old muscle cars with so much power they would wrinkle the paint when you hit the gas. A Prius is faster than a lot of them were from 0 to 60.

Truth be told, I have some pics I believe I can find. The KS has a bigger exhaust port, cleaner casting lines and supposedly better timing numbers (that I cannot prove).

I remember you sending me the picture of the difference when you replaced the mahle on your 044 with the KS

I've read people not being able to tell the difference while cutting as well though.

I musta deleted it. We send so many pics back and forth that my phone doesn't have the memory to hold it all LOL.

I remember seeing the slight difference though

I've got an 044 10mm KS jug that I've put the wheel on to get stock #'s on. I also have a 12mm 440 gillardoni jug. I'll throw on the 12mm jug in a couple hours and post factory timing on both to compare. The casting on the gillardoni jug porting is much smoother than on the KS jug tho

Ok, thanks. Just wondering. I figured there might Be an element of rarity involved. I've toyed with the idea of having my 10mm 044 ported but... It just runs so well in its own right. Almost as if it already has been. I should probably leave well enough alone.

Stock 12mm Gillardoni ms440 w/o base gasket are ex opening 101, xfers 115, intake 70. KS jug wasn't stock, so couldn't get those #'s.

The KS 10mm also has a similar intake floor. I didnt move mine and remember it being near 70-72.

I think thats part of why high transfers and short blowdown works so well on this Stihl series.

If I had to guess, I'd say the KS openings are more like ex 104, xfer 118.
