Here’s the oldest 026 I’ve come across. It has some unusual features that I’ve encountered on this model for the first time. It’s an ‘O’ making it an ‘89 or second year production. it has a top engine cover missing the little hole for the cold weather cover.
it has a different style of knobs and a black lever and the muffler is the most restrictive I’ve seen. This saw was acquired from an individual at his yard sale. Told me he bought it new in the early 90’s and used it to gather firewood until his grandson straight gassed it last year. Told me it’s never needed anything but when given the estimate to fix it he bought a new 261. He even thru in the 261 box. 6038C754-6590-442A-9586-990C2796CFF9.jpeg9849E2DB-EE63-4C3D-B0C5-A7C9B77A837D.jpeg70785D5A-25D6-4049-A534-2BB4545DCF59.jpeg22E5EFB4-CCF3-4573-8A3C-7EF4AB84EDE3.jpeg93B237ED-088E-4CF4-B849-94D342A2278E.jpeg

@ Backtroller
Thank you. You confirm my source
There it is written:
J = 1984

K= 1985
and so on ...

Then
Z=1999
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a "P" on my 1990 bought 026
But I do not know the date of manufacturing
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eyerything would make sense if STIHL does not use 2 letters of the alphabet.
I.e. they would only use 24 letters. ( clock system)

If you guys would report about the letters you have got on your tools,
maybe you can solve the entire letter system.:thumbsup:

That is a very early one, I have a few but I have never seen that style of muffler before.
