Please try to took at this from a Toolmakers' point-of-view.

I bought a file that is intended for square filing. Looking at the edges, there are two bevels that look like they add up to 90 deg..

Why can't is simply use a "square" file? A 1/4" or 5/16" square file would work perfectly. (maybe even 3/16" would work)

I understand that angles and depths and undercut would need to be maintained.

Just asking...............

I gotta say that I feel a round filed chain with a good hook would technically seem to be better than square filed for chip removal.

Double bevel square files are less than 90 degrees? Haven't tried a true square file but I imagine you wouldn't be able to keep the flat off the rakers. Put one on a chain and see.
